Melbourne, Wednesday. A deputation of farmers waited to-day 1 upon the Premier to ask that a policy of Protection be adopted against the introduction of New Zealand grain into Victoria. Mr Service, in reply, offered no encouragement to the views of the deputation. Thursday. Mauritius advices to 20th April report that inferior sugar is lower in price, and a poor crop is expected. 1,400 tons have cleared for Australia, and 200 for New Zealand. Messrs William -Howard Smith and Sons, owners of a large fleet of steamers trading between Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia contemplate having their boats fitted with refrigeration machiuery for the purpose of carrying shipments of meat from Queensland to be transhipped at Sydney to the Orient Hoe. Freights at Mauritius by last advices had little enquiry. The rate to Australia was 33a 6d to 37s 6d. Tonnage was scarce. Sydney, Thursday. At the anti-Chinese meeting la3t night, at which fully 800 persons were present, Mr Ninan Melville, the new member for Northumberland, declared he would stonewall the Assembly on the immigration and Chinese questions. News has been received from the Barrington Diggings that the crushing of two tons of quartz yielded 190 ozs. of gold.
