London, May 1. Five per cent New Zealand Loan, 1889, 107. At tho wool sales to-day, 12,900 bales were offered, making a total of 139,500 bales catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sale was quieter, and washed crossbreds are 3d lower, and greasy crossbreds 2d lower. May 5. The University of Glasgow has conferred the Honorary Degree upon the Hon. Thomas M'llraith, Colonial Secretary of Queensland, who is now on a visit to this country. The Right Hon Robert Lowe has been raised to the Peerage. A despatch from the London Government has been published, which states that the cost of the Afghan war will probably exceed the estimate by at least four million pounds. Calcutta, May 5. The latest news from Afghanistan reports that General Stewart has replaced General Sir Frederick Roberts in command of the British forces at Cabul.
