In connection with the attempt to set fire to the corporation offices it has been fouud that about a gallon of kerosene was poured over the floor, table, ami books kept by a clerk named Shaw. From enquiries made by the police ifc was ascertained thafc yesterday was audit day. A number of rate books and counterfoils had been pulled down from the shelf, and after the oil had been poured over tbem they had been ranged round. The books were open in order that they they would readily burn. Suspicion was directed to Shaw, from the fact that he was the mosfc active in suggesting theories to account fire, poiniing out foot marks on the table below the window which nobody else could see, at last he seemed to become conscious that suspicion pointed to him, and at once he went to the Mayor and confessed to have been embezzling money belonging to the Corporation and falsified the books to hide his defalcations, bufc denied having set the place on fire. The police have since discovered that Shaw purchased kerosene in bottles, which were found in the room, from Manoy and Co. on Saturday. Shaw is well connected, and has been some years in the employ of the Corporation. About six months ago he was appointed rate collector, and the supposed defalcation occurred since. He states he has no idea how much he embezzled, and ifc will take the Auditor several days to find out, though several specific embezzlements are already discovered. Shaw has a wife and large family, and much sympathy is expressed for them. Later. William Henry Shaw, late rate receiver, was charged at the Resident Magistrates' Court with setting fire fire to the Government Buildings yesterday, and was remanded for eight days. Auckland, Tuesday. At the meeting of St. Stephen's Orphan Home last nighfc the report showed that there were 61 inmates, the total income .£961, and expenditure £959. The contributions from the Government amounted to £233. The Supreme Court civil sittings opened to-day. The case of Alexauder Smith v.
