Wellincwon, Thursday night. - Michael Simon, recently sent to Opunake, . has come into' a fortune of nearly £5,000, * left him by relatives in the South Island. Postal revenue for March quarter 1880, £46,625 18s ; corresponding quarter, 1879 £34,615 13s Id. The total Postal revenue for the financial period of lst Jaly, 1879, to 3.lsfc March, 1880, £115,680 14s 3d. , A deputation waited on the Government to-day re the new railway station being erected of wood in the centre of the city, contrary to the building regulations. The reply was that in the present state of finances it was nofc desirable to build of brick at preBent, bufc when they were in a better position a substantial building would be erected. At the interview between the Fire Brigade, Insurance Companies, and City Council re the Fire Brigades intending to lock up their stations through subsidies being stopped, the lusurance Companies said they would pay one-third of the cost of one Brigade consisting of 30 members, and a paid superintendent. The Council will consider the matter to-night. Friday. The Stella, when coming out of Queen Charlotte Sound yesterday, bound for the Brothers' Lighthouse, and when abreast of Cape Koamoroo, and going full speed struck amidships on a sunken rock. . She dragged j clear, when she was found makiDg no water. The rock ia between Cape Koamoroo and White Rock, about a quarter of a mile outaide any mark on the chart. Capt. McKersie took the bearings of the rock and buoyed it. Capt. Johnston of the Marine Department left in the Stella this morning to ascertain the exact position of the rock. Thß body of Devereux, one of the men lost in the Wairarapa Lake, was found yesterday. . A telegram was received in town to-day announcing that the ship Calypso was run down ofE Margate, but all hands were saved." The Calypso was commanded by Captain Hird, and left Port Chalmers for London on January 19th with 19 passengers. Her cargo consisted of 4,376 bales of wool and sundries, of the total value of £86,896. George Schmidt who was arrested for | obtaining mouey under false pretences was found shortly after being locked up lyiug.in a pool of blood. '! he sufferer was removed to the hospital where he ia in a precarious condition. The only motive suggested for the act was that Schmidt has. been suifering from asthma, which was unusually painful yesterday, and it is supposed that he attempted his life in a fit of desperation. Hokitika, Friday. Some six or seven shafts haye been bottomed on payable gronud afc the new rush at the Forks, Okarita. The ground is proved about 400 feet in breadth, and if others bottom who are sinkiug on the same line it is thought that a considerable rush will shortly set in. Invekcakgill, Friday. Arthur Cox was to-day committed for trial on a charge thafc he did, on Easter Monday, feloniously kill and slay Eobert Curtiß.
