Governor, Dr Hector, Messrs Dransfleld, Hutchison, Lemon, Levin, M'lntyre, Krull, Thompson, and Tolhurst. Mr Travers applied for a writ ef habeas corpus this afternoon. After argument, His Honor intimated that it was usual to make an application of the kind to the Judge of the district where the prisoner was confined, but if the Crown waived any objection on this score he would grant a rule nisi. The applicasion on the subject was adjourned. Friday. The Times states that a rumor is current that Major Willis has resigned his seat for Kangitikei, and that Sir W. Fox is likely to come forward and be elected without opposition. George Longhurst, who was convicted for rape, was sentenced to 10 years hard labor, and to rece've fifty lashes. The cha-ge made against the Superintendent of the Asylum for cruelty to patients has been dismissed. At the Supreme Court George Ward Beer for frandulent "bankruptcy was acquitted. Christchtjkch, Friday. The session of the General Synod of the Church of England will he opened by the Primate of New Zealand on Tuesday »ext. The Bishop of Nelson will preach at the evening service. In reply to a deputation yesterday're bnilding a bridge over the Heathcote, Mr Hall said that a Bill has to be reintroduced in the coming session as private. A seaman on the Margaret Galbraith had a narrow escape from drowning yesterday. After the ship hauled' out he foolishly attempted to swim ashore, and was only sated through a buoy they threw to him' from Walchmas Pier. Leonard Price, a well-known storekeeper at Waimate, vtas yesterday fined £5 and costs at the local Magistrates' Court for kissing a young lady against her will. The case excited considerable interest in the township. Hamilton, Thursday. The Waikato Times publishes important particulars regarding the last gathering of Kingite natives at Kopua and Hikurangi. Tawbiao and Te Ngakau were absent. The latter is in disgrace at Kawhia, consequent on the want of tact he displayed at the last meeting. Sir George Grey, Mr Sheeban, Rewi, and a number of important men were present. Te Whiti was invited, but did not come. The King Party feeling is antagonistic to Te Whiti, and no armed resistance will be offered to the road or railway surveyors. The King is concentrating the people at Kawhia, where there are indications of a permanent settlement. A large number of Ngatituwharetoa have arrived on the south side of Taupo to settle in the King country at his request. Many of the chiefs speak freely about surveys, leases, and sales, and the Times says ifc needs but one or two powerful cbiefs to take the lead, when there would be a rush to open up the King country for settlement. On the whole the position of ■native affairs in the King country is very satisfactory. TurAKc, Thursday night. The races to-day were poorly patronised, the weather being dull and unfavorable. Won by half a length. Time, 2 mine. 45 sees. Handicap Hurdle Race :— Milo 1, JLittle John 2. Won easily by three lengths. Ddnedin, Friday. Three common jury cases are set down for trial at the civil sittings, and one divorse case, the parties being connected with the police. A strong bar is engaged. Auckland, Friday. The charge of indecent assault against Stephen Hughes, junior, solicitor and collector to the Ponsonby Highway Board, will occupy the Supreme Court all day. The charge is brought by a girl of sixteen, who was engaged as servant in hi 3 house. The girl, while under cross ezamination this morning, said that Hughes had never taken any liberties with her before this occasion, and that he bad once discharged a man of whose conduct she had complained.
