The petition of the Licensed Victuallers, lately presented to the City Council, re sly grog selling, has been forwarded to the Police with, a request that they will take action in the matter. Timaru, Wednesday! Hegarty, the longdistance walker of Southland, completed the task of walking 112 miles iv twenty-four hours last evening, seven minutes within tho time, lie was fearfully exhausted towards the finish, and in the last mile he fell down twice, and brandy had to be dashed over him and his hair pulled and ribs poked to revive him, find keep him awake ; the crowd in the meantime calling ou him to "go it old man," " don't give io." The exhibition was disgraceful and brutal. A protest has been entered that the mile was twenty six yards short, but Hegarty declares if the distance is disputed that he is prepared to walk ?15 miles in the same time. A married woman who had been drinking and quarrelling with her husband, attempted to commit suicide by swallowing laudanum yesterday, but the exertions of two medical men. saved her life. Napier, Thursday. Several dead bodies have been found in the rivers during the last few days, and no. doubt they were men who were trying to cross during the floods. A good deal of damage was done in the Hawke's Bay and Wairoa counties, and it will take about £5000 to put the roads and bridges in state of thorough repair. Private losses were not nearly so great as from the great depth and extent of the flood might have been expected. Mr Farmer, of Hastings, was the heaviest loser in stock, 1500 being drowned, Ifc will probabe a month before the coaches can come through the bush road. The natives at Wairoa are indulging in threats of murdering each other; their dispute refers to some land, but it is not likely to go beyond blank cartridge. Information has been laid on behalf of F. Ward, jun., of Gisborne, against Reparta Tucker, interpreter, for malicious prosecution and conspiracy. " The case arises out of a recent prosecution of Ward, in which, after four days hearing at Gisborne, the Resident Magistrate dismissed the charges of conspiracy brought against Ward and Cooper, but commented strongly on the couduct of Cooper, aDd advised VV ard to be careful in future not to be misled by clients. Dunedin, Thursday. Butler has been committed for trial for the Grant murder. He begged the publio aud press not to be influenced by the prejudice attempted to be created against him, and reserved his defence. lie charges Inspector Mallard with attempting to influence the public prejudicially, aud made a long statement on the subject. Ciiristchurch, Thursday. A "bailiff, while searching the premises yesterday of a well known saddler, afc Kaiapoi, found a large stock of goods secreted under fche shop floor. About thirty Volunteers, wearing Naval Brigade uniform, collected between two and three o'clock yesterday morning in trout of the Carlton Hotel. Papanni Road, and demanded drink, which the landlord refused to supply, aud sent his servant for the police. The Navals pitched the messenger back over the fence, and threatened to break open the front door. The landlord proceeded to the back yard and rang a large dinner-bell and vigorously shouted fire.
