[Press Association,! Wellington, Tuesday night. The Secretary of the Post Office supplies the following memo : — " The Australia, with the February mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 23rd inst., two days in advance of the time table date. The City of Sydney with the London mails of the 26th February, left for San Francisco on the 20th inst., being five days late. The very late departure of the City of Sydney from San Francisco is, no doubt, due to the fact that the steamer caught fire on the 4th inst., the day before she should have sailed for Auckland. The fire, it was alleged, was speedily extinguished and but little damage done, but judging however, from her reported very late sailing, the damage must have been much more serious than was at first anticipated. The mails should have reached Auckland on the 10th proximo." A olerk named Henry Kirk, who was suspected to be of unsound mind, is reported to be missing since the 26th January. Wednesday. The Wellington aud Nelson Volunteers -arrived from Christchurch this morning. The Nelaon members leave at 12 o'clock today. Christohukch, Tuesday night.
