[Press Association. | Ddnedin, Saturday. The Governor intimates in the papers that he is not in any way interested in any of the Hon W. Robinson's horses. Probably lie will form a stud of his own. He has bought one horse in the North, but has not taken delivery. If he goes in for racing it will not be in partnership with anyone. The nominations for the Dunedin Champagne Stakes 1881 close on Tuesday. Edward Thorne, for stealing money, was sentenced to six hours imprisonment and to receive twelve lashes. An important discovery has been made at Cardrona. A quartz reef, carrying silver in considerable quantities, was found on the main Cardrona range near the heads of Branch Boundary Creek. A protecting area has heen applied for. The stone is supposed to contain gold. Wellington, Saturday. Dr Lemon has received a cable message from Col. Glover, the chairman of the Eastern Extension Company forwarding the following message from the Lady Mayoress of Dublin : — " To the Australian and New Zealand press. As a daughter of Caroline Chisholm, the emigrants' friend, I thank the Australian people for the magnificent subscriptions to the Mansion House fund for the relief of the Irish distress. I don't know what we could have done without your aid. It makes me so proud of my old home. £1500 per Bank of Australasia, £1500 per Union Bank of Australia, £500 from Launceston,aud £1000 from Adelaide just received. Again thanks." The following telegram has been received from Dunedin :— " His Excellency the Governor has not received any information concerning any probability of war between England and Russia referred to in Renter's SydHsy messages of yesterday,"
A man named Brown, a laborer employed on the Corporatien Works at Newtown, was killed this morning by a fall of earth. Oamaru, Saturday. A man named James Geering recently discharged from the lunatic asylum drowned himself in a creek. Christchurch, Saturday. Mr E. J. Lee has been unanimously elected Chairman of the Selwyn County Council, vice the Hon John Hall. Classes for religions instruction on Saturdays for sehool children have been established at St Andrew's Church.
