[Press Association. ] Wellington, Tuesday. The New South Wales and Queensland Government unite with ours in protesting against the importation of French convicts. The three Agents General will make remonstrance. The public meeting convened by the Mayor last eight appointed a committee for the Irish distress fund. Arrived— Wakatipu, from Sydney, at 10 o'clock this morning. She left there on the 18th instant, had a heavy S.E. gale on the 20th, but no damage was done, and thence fine weather. Gisbornb, Tuesday. There ia considerable excitement about the oil springs. A member of the firm of Clarke Brothers, of Melbourne, and Mr Fleming, the representative of Canada at the Melbourne Exhibition, an oil expert, have visited tbe springs. Mr Fleming says the indications are equal to anything in America. It is probable that a company with a capifal of £60,000 will be floated to work the oil, and operations be immediately commenced. Roberts and the whole of the A.C.'s under his command at Kaipipi, shifted ennip to day, and took up a position on the Otaiketo stream, about 5 miles north of the old camp. The natives visited the damp iv the afternoon and intimated that a preaont of food would be made this day. Christchurch, Tuesday. At the Assessment Court yeaterday, 42 out of 53 objections were disallowed. The Canterbury College yesterday in its report on the Agricultural School showed that the entrance standard was so high that only two pupils presented themselves, and one of them failed. It Was resolved that the Fifth Standard of the Government schools be the future basis of examination. The University Seuate yesterday resolved, " That a clause be introduced in any Hospital and Charitable Institution Bill to be passed iv Parliament containing the following provisions : — (I). That where medical schools exist in connection with the New Zealand University the Professors and Lecturers of such schools be ex offlcio members of the hospital established there. (2). That the Government and Council make equitable arrangements when necessary for hospitals being utilised for imparting practical instruction in such places as aforesaid. It was agreed to recommend the reelection of Mr H J. Tancred as Chancellor and Dr. Hector as Vice-Chancellor. There was a public debate last night on the subject " That Christ was delivered for our offences'and raised again for our justification." Both sides argued well and it will be resumed to night. During the fortnight, sixteen cases of typhoid fever and two of diptheria have been reported. Napier, Tuesday. Mills, who on Saturday evening arrived in town and gave a sensational account to the police about the natives shooting sheep on Moorhou&e's run, was never in the employ of Moorhouse, and no station hands have left. Mills appears to have repeated a bogus report, as no reliable information has been received here of any serious disturbance.
