The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1880.

Ik bis address to the electors last night', Mr Pitt went very fully into the <jueation of the railway route, and stated that- after going into the matter very carefully :with Mr Blair, the engineer, he was quite convinced that, however desirable from a settlement point of view it might be and undoubtedly was, to take the line through the Motueka Valley and by way of the Hope, the engineering difficulties were so great and the cost of overcoming them would be so enormous that there was nothing left but to adopt the Roundell route. It is to be hoped that, after the expression of opinion that has fallen from both our representatives, founded as it is upon the report of a professional expert, tbe opposition that has been offered to the line as now surveyed, and for which the working plans are completed, will cease, and that the first section of tho railway from Bell Grove to Greymouth will be commenced without any further delay. We have received a disgustingly long telegram from Invercargill, informing us that the VolunSeers from that part are going to take their own tents to Cliristcburch to a review to be held there, and stating that the Invercargill men aae annoyed at being asked to occupy the imoiigration barracks. . Now we wish to state most distinctly tbat we don't care a brass farthing whether the luvercirgill men sleep in tents or barracks, whether they camp out or whether they get the best accommodation that Christchurcb can afford them. The only thing in connection wiihthis review, about which we have been pestered by wire for several weeks past, that we really and most devoutly long to hear, i 3 that it is all over, and that the telegraph agents, whom it appears to have driven mad, have once more recovered their sanity. Time was when items of news were telegraphed only because they were interesting. Now, forsooth, Borne people seem to tbiuk that whatever they choose to wire must „be interesting because it is telegraphed. The electors of Waimea West are.reminded of Mr Ilurathouse's me eting which is be held iv the Village schoolroom on Saturday evening next at 8 o'clock. The annual meeting of the members of the Harmonic Society takes place this evening in the practice room. Complaints have been made to us of tho favoritism displayed by the Executive of tbe Rifle Association to Wellington men, who are actually to be brought over here, at whose expense is not yet known, to act as markers at the forthcoming meeiing There are plenty of Volunteers in the Nelson district who are quite capable of performing the duties, and would be glad of the job, and why men should be imported from Wellington it is difficult to explain. We should like to know upon whose recommendation so uncalled-for a step has been taken. The Gaiety Variety Troupe are barbound at Greymouth, and consequently will be unable to appear this evening as advertised. They hope, however, to be here in tima to give their advertised performance to-morrow night. THe Hewetts announce that they will give one of their miscellaneous entertainments, comprising music, singing, acting, and " second sight," at the Masonic Hall this evening, when, in the absence of any amusement of. late, they should get a bumper bouse.
