In reply to a telegram as to the rate of freights now ruling in Adelaide the following waß received to-day. :— Adelaide to United Kingdom 555; out ports to United Kingdom 57a 6d, with a dull market. The directors of the N.Z. Shipping Company voted to day the sum of 100 guineas to the relief of the Irish distress. Messrs Harrington and Ballard who leave the Cbrisechurch telegraph office for Napier were given a dinner last uight by their fellow officials. Wednesday. the anxiety was increased when they learned that nine scabby sheep had afterwards crossed the Waiau river. All the settlers in the neighborhood turned put to search, and in the various flocks eleven infected sheep were found. The sheep in the district where the scabby ones passed through have been dipped, and where they were found 500 fine merino wethers were mustered and slaughtered. Every effort and sacrifice i 3 being maiie to stamp out the disease. Some beagles were sold here by auction yesterday at 128 each. DttNEDttt, Tuesday night. The operators who went out on strike have been fined £5 each. The ship Canterbury with immigrants is at the Heads. Wednesday. Arrived— Ship Wellington with 400 immigrants. 750 Volunteers attended the inspection by Col. Scratchley last night who distributed the prizes won at the Rifle Association meeting. Col. Scratchley aud Major Sargood of Victoria strongly deprecated drilling the men in halls at night. Oa dit that the Tramway proprietors offered to pay £400 before auy proceedings were taken, re tbe Castle-street accident. - NoKHANBY, Wednesday. < Major Goring and 92 m|en arrived at Kaipipi from Opunake on Monday afternoon, makiog in all - 200 men lander Colonfil Roberts. The camp is cleared and in goou order, and the men are hard a*t work on the road. There have been no Native visitors. All the men are exceedingly well conducted. The camp is much pleasanter since the rain of yesterday morning. Kumara, Tuesday night. A very heavy flood in the Teremakau river last night carried away, another of the dolphin bays. The mails were . all stopped to-day, and part of the Arahaura bridge was carried away, and the Christchurch coach was unable to leave. The first instalment of .£l4O was forwarded to the Lord Mayor of Dablin yesterday towards the Irish Distress Fund, and subscriptions throughout the district have yet to come in. - , TiMARtr, Tuesday night. - The Levels Road Board recently let the valuation of the district by tender and a new valuer was appointed ataßavingof £100 on tbe remuneration demanded by the former one. The new valuation has given terrible dissatisfaction, being full of discrepancies inaccuracies and omissions, and the Board today held a special meeting and decided to appear before the .Assessment Court with last year's valuation rolls, and apply to have the omissions inserted and altetations made where the properties have been undervalued. A heavy rain fell during the greater part of last night but the weather is now beautiful. Wellington, Wednesday. The Post states that the Postmaster at Otaki has been suspended owing to his having dated an entry for the Wellington races as being posted on the 19th when really it was posted on the 20th, und that it was so stamped to suit the convenience of the writer. At a meeting of Protestants last night a Committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements for Pastor Chiniquy's visit here. Horn Mohi Taphai has resigned bis appointment as one of the Royal Commission on native affairs.
