The outrigger race was rowed to-day. Wellington and Wanganui started and the former won by thirty lengths. Wellington beat Wanganui in the inrigger race by four lengths. A young man named Frederick Buckley was sentenced to four weeks imprisonment for playing " under and over " in a public place. Several others are detained in custody on suspicion of having false dice, &c. in their possession. The Volunteer whaleb^at race this morn--ing was a most exciting one, the Wanganui Fire Brigade haviug a lead of about half a length of Wellingtou Naval Brigade, which they maintained throughout. It was the most intei eating rece ever witnessed here. Auckland, Thursday. Mr Winthrop has imported from Sydney four head of cattle of the Alderney breed which took the first prizes at the Exhibition. Capt. Mackie of the Ben Nevis is exonerated from the charges made against him by two. passengers. Samples from the supposed new copper lode at Coromandel have been sent to the Government for analysis. Afc the Police Court ■ this morning, in a charge of assault upon a constable, the complainant admitted that he had been drinking with the priaouer prior to the arrest, and the 1 Magistrate thereupon dismissed the informs* tion and discharged the prisoner. Four boys were brought up to-day charged with absconding from the Industrial Home, and remanded. Dunedin, Thursday. The city valuation is £289,173 for 1880 against £281,000 for 1879. At the City Court Matthew Pearson, a carter, was sentenced to seven days for having an " under and over seven boafd " at the Blueskin Show. Friday. A skeleton has been found at the head of Bannockburn Creek, which, from papers found on the clothes, is identified as that of McKeown, a miner, who was missed during during a snowstorm three years ago. Hugh Bell, an old resident at Bannockburn, is missing, and is supposed, to have been drowned in crossing the river to his farm. , There is a good deal of speculation in" the Macetown reefs, and shares in Tipperary and Gladstone scrip an changing hands at 25s to 30s per share. Captain Russell, the Underwriters' Association surveyor, says that the Speedwell's repairs are utterly inadequate, and that it is the worst case of unseaworthiness that ever came under his notice. The Marine Department casts the entire responsibily on the Government officers. Six insolvencies were filed this week, including Simeon Isaacs, publican, of Dunedin; liabilities £3162, assets £2400. In the Ashley district reaping is in full swing, and with good weather the end of the . week will see a large proportion of the crops cut. A goods train consisting of 72 .loaded trucks equal to 370 tons was drawn up from Lyttelton yesterday by one of the new American locomotives. An interview with a deputation from the the Anglers Society who waited on the Acclimatisation Council with reference to the crosslining and illegal fishing now carried on in the Avon, resulted i» » subcommittee from_each body being appointed to draw-up draft regulations for river fishing the Council will recommend the Government to proclaim. On the recommendation of Dr Hector, the white fish fry are to be kept in the races in the Acclimatisation Society's grounds for some weeks before being forwarded to the lake.
