Wellingtos, Tuesday night. In the House this afternoon Major Atkinson, in reply to Mr Stevens, said they hoped to see their way to place the Fire Brigades of the colony iv the same position as rejwrds capitation allowances ai that held by Volunteers. Sir George Grey asked if the Government 1 were prepared to purchase locomotives built in the colony at an advance on the price paid for engines imported from EDgland or America — Mr Oliver said the number of engines ordered by the late Government was quite sufficient to meet all requirements for several years. Mr Kolleston, replying to Mr Barron, said arrangements bad been made by which maps showing the land open for occupation would be hung up in conspicuous places at each land and post office. ; The remainder of the Bitting was in Committee on the Registration of Electors Bill. On the motion of Major Atkinson, Clause 19 was amended by which an objector in each case must deposit £20.— Mr Hislop moved that no objection be entertained except such as is mentioned in the summons. — Carried on the voices.— The price of rolls was fixed at Is per thonsand names, and Is 6d above that number— Several minor amendments were made in other clauses. The Houso adjourned at 5.30 pm. Wednesday. After the House resuming at 7.30, the Registration of Electors Bill withamendments was reported. The House then went into Committee on the Regulation of Elections Bill, and all the clauses up to No. 8 were agreed to without alteration. Mr Hislop, to No. 8 moved an amendment that, when the writs were issued, a day should be named in each writ for the polling. A division was taken : — Ayes 30, Noes 2 1.-— Clause 9. On the motion of Mr Montgomery, the word "fifteen " was struck out, and the word " ten " substituted.— ln clause 10, the word " person " was struck out and the words "duly registered elector " were substituted.— An amendment was moved by Mr Reeves that the £19 proposed to be deposited by each candidate be made £20. A division took place, and the amendment was lost by 26 to 25. — With reference to the amaMeat number of votes polled that would involve the forfeiture of the deposit paid, it was resolved, after considerable diacussion and many amendments, that it should be one-fifth of the number polled by the highest successful candidate. — A great many clauses were disposed of, after which progress was reported, and the House adjourned.
