The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1879.
At midnight on Friday last the House of Representatives went to a division which resulted in the defeat of Sir George Grey's Government. To day we learn that the London Times bas devoted an article to the subject, which may be taken as a proof, first, that the distance which separates the mother from her young child has virtually beeu annihilated by the tiny wire that, lying on lhe ocean bed and traversing sandy deserts and mountain ranges, connects the two, and secondly that the interest with which this youn.. colony is regarded at home is increasing with the progress she is making. Aud if the defeat of the Grey Ministry is of sufficient interest to Englaud to form the theme of a leading article in its leading journal, it surely ia of equal, if not greater, iuterest and importance to us iv New Zealand to learn what that paper thinks of the political crisis we are now going through, the first stage of which was passed on Friday night. And tbis is what the wires tell us; — "The London Times, in a leading article, rejoice. i, ¥ pr the defeat of the Grey Ministry, saying that they have- brought the Government of the colony into contempt." After two years, during which he bas possessed almost unlimited power, for tbe policy of. hM opponent, has been to pay out the rope *s fee i equired it, and to let him
i ' ; have as much as he wanted, this is what Sir George Grey has done for tbe colony. Brought its Government into contempt in the old country, to which we look to supply us with the funds necessary for carrying out our public works, and whose good opinion we must all of us wish to retaiu. The colony has now twice condemned him, England, through the mightiest journal the world has ever seen, has condemued him, and now it only remains for us to hope that he who has thus brought us into disrepute will, as a telegram published elsewhere says he intends to do, relinquish the leadership of his party. New Zealand has had enough, and more than enough, of him.
