EDUCATION BOARD.

Present Messrs Barnicoat (Chairman), Rout, Wastney, Dencker, Campbell, and the Bishop of Nelson. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. The following items in the report of the t inance and Works Committees were adopted. 1 hat the Motupiko Committee be allowed £2 to defray the cost of cupboard and shelves. That the Upper Wakefield Committee he allowed £33 16s to defray the cost of painting, shinglm*?, and renewing piles of school. - hat the Reefton Committee be allowed £92 to derray the cost of additional chimney and outbuildings. That the Ngatimoti Committee be allowed £13 to enable them to provide chimney for back kitcheu and to ciear the school ground of stumps. That the Dovedale Committee be allowed £20 lOs to pay for school furniture, closet, and excavating. That the Westport Committee be allowed £50 for gravelling round the two Westport schools. That the request of Messrs Packer Bros., for a further extension of time to enable them to complete the schoolhouse at Riwaka be acceded to, six weeks additional being allowed. That a school be built at Richmond on the same plan as that at Brightwater, the cost not to exceed £309. That plans of a teacher's house prepared by Mr J. Scott be adopted for Spring Grove and Uiwaka, and that the Secretary advertise for tenders. It was resolved after a division that Mr C. Parker's plan of a teacher's house at Lower Moutere be adopted, the cost not to exceed £250. Ayes 3 : Messrs Dencker, Rout, and the Bishop of Nelson. Noes 2 : Messrs Wastney and Campbell. Resolved that Mr Rout be requested to undertake a survey of the school-room at Foxhill with the view of reporting to the Board at its next meeting. The Board of Examiners reported that in their opinion Miss Stothart was tbe most eligible of the six candidates for the office of head mistress of Toi Toi Valley school. The Board of Examiners also reported that Mrs Bryant was in their opinion the mo3t eligible of the four applicants for the post of mistress Df Brightwater school. Resolved, That the report of the Examiners be adopted by the Education Board. Resolved, That with reference to the appointment of a head mistress for the Toi-toi VaUey girls' school, a copy of the following resolution be forwarded to the Town Committee : — "A doubt having been raised whether several of the subjects proposed to be taught in the Toi-toi Valiey girls' school and first division of the Town boys' school, can legally form part of the course of instruction in any but district High schools, duly constituted under lhe Education Act, the Board suggest to the Town Committee the reconsideration of the question of converting these schools into High schools. The Board also propose that, for the foregoing reason, no appointment of a head teacher for the Toi-toi Valley school be made at present." Resolved, That £10 be allowed for lining the roof of the school room at Hillside. Resolved, On the report of the Inspector, that Pakawau be constituted a school district An application for a school at Niue Mile Beach, near Charleston, having been laid before the Board, the Secretary was instructed to communicate with the Charlestoo Committee, with the view of obtaining their opinion on the matter. Resolved, Tbat the Chairman of the Board be appointed a member of the Works and Fiuance Committee. Resolved, That a sum not exceeding £20 be allowed for school furniture at Stoke. Resolved, That a special meeting of the Board, to revise the salary list, be convened by the Secretary during October. Notice of motion by Mr Dencker :— Tbat £9 be allowed for outbuildings, and for painting verandah at Neudorf.
