CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortuightly meeting was held ast night. Present : The Mayor, Crs Trask, Crewdson, Harley, and Cross. On the accounts being read for the past fortujght, Cr Ilarley objected to the item payment for over time on Suuday last, as on wet days the men did no work. l{e therefore thought they ought to work whenever required.—Cr Trask thought it was an exceptional case. He was sure Or ilarley would

not have liked to be out in the rain all last Sunday for nothing.— Cr Crewdson thought the men ought to be paid. — Item put and carried. Ayes : The Mayor, Cra Trask, Crewdson, and Cross. No : Cr Harley. On Taylor's account for hones and carts being read, Cr Harley said complaints had been made to him that two horses only did the work that one used to do.— The City Surveyor was called in and stated that he was perfectly satisfied with the amount of stuff taken at a load. On Messrs Pitt and Moore's account for £10 2s being read, Cr Harley objected to it. When the Council bad done all they conld to put business in that solicitor's way, he thought it was unreasonable that he should send in such an account. He thought Mr Gully ought to give legal opinions on all trifling matters.— The Mayor and Cr Trask desired to impress upon Cr Harley the fact that Mr Gully was their Town Clerk, and not their solicitor. — Accouut passed, Cr Harley objecting. A letter was read from Mr E. Haase, complaining that a lot of mud in the shape of a footpath had been placed in front of his gate in Waimea-street. Referred to the City Surveyor.— A letter was read from Mr Mr Thomas Butler, suggesting a means of obtaining a further water supply for the town from Simpson's Gully. Referred to the Public Works Committee.— A letter was read from residents in Waimea-street, asking that the footpath might be made up between the Haven road and Hardy-street. Referred to the City Surveyor.— A letter from White and Bligh, relative to a ditch near the railway station, was referred to the Public Works Committee.— A letter from Mr J. Eatwell, complaining of the state of the road between his house and Nile-street, was referred to the Public Works Committee, as was one from Mr Wymond, calling attention to the state of Trafalgar-street South.— A letter from Mr Newport, relative to a crossing of the Brookstreet stream, was referred to the City Surveyor.— A letter from Mr W. C. Wilkins, calling attention to the footpath in Waimeastreet near Mrs Snow's, was referred to the City Surveyor with instructions to make temporary repairs.— A letter was read from Mr E. Orr, offering his services for supplying a plan for draining the town. A recommendation contained in the Public Works Committee's report that the footpath be formed and kerbed from the Prince Albert Hotel to the Maitai was discussed, and it was decided not to proceed with the work for a time. The Snrveyor was instructed to repair the breastwork at the Brook-street bridge in Niie-street. A letter was received from Messrs Bunny and Sinclair stating that they had been in--Btructed by Mr Manton to ask the Council whether they were prepared to grant him compensation for injuries that he had received through the neglect of their servants in leaving a trestle on the road after dark. Referred to the Finance Committee. Certain suggestions made by Cr Harley were referred to the Public Works Committee. They were to the following effect:— That the culvert inEmanustreet be repaired; that plans and specifications be prepared for a culvert across Waimea Road near the Rising Sun Hotel, and that certain repairs be made in the neighborhood of the Scotch Church. The Council then adjourned.
