[PRESS ACENCr.I Wellington, Monday. All the returns of the Wakatipu election are now in and give Finn a majority of over 30. The Hauraki chiefs decline to give up the Maoris who shot at the Surveyors, but say that if the natives do the like again they will be handed over to justice. AH the returns for the East Coast Maori elections are in. The numbers are: — Henare Towana 1072: Hans Tapsell 982; Henare Matua 841; Potae 29. The Under Secretary for Defence requests that Tolunteer companies may consider the advisibleness of appointing a uniform dress and color throughout the Volunteer force of New Zealand. An influential deputatation will wait on Mr Edward Pearce to request that he will consent to be nominated for the Mayoralty in November. AH the Miui3ters are in Wellington now. Edward Tyler, a man of education and ability, was brought up at the Court to-day. He had been living in a closet for some time back, and was half starved and almost imbecile. He said he could obtain no employment whatever. Dunedin, Saturday. All the Wakatipu returns are now in but one where tbere are 14 voters only. The totals are:— Finn 253; Mason 220; Manders 140. The judgment of the tribes of Hauraki was most elaborate, justifying the crime from the Maori point of view, but showing that the peace of Hauraki would be at stake if the offenders did not surrender to be tiied by the European law. A formal demand was then made for the offenders and refused The tribes then separated, but yesterday two of the leading chiefs, Tukukiui and Pinahe, talked the matter over and arrived at the conclusion to see that the men were given up to the European law. A pigeon message received late last night says that with the exception of Pinabe the Ngatihakos left for their homes at ? o'clock on Saturday night. It is expected that withiu a week the case will come up in the Police Court. All day yesterday Tukokino and Pinahe talked the matter over, the result being that the obstructionist bad persuaded Hinaka to allow Pakara and Epiaba to be given over to justice lest the peace of the district should be disturbed, but it will be four or five days before the matter is finally settled. Wanganui, Monday. A fire broke out at Kell's general store on Taupo Quay and the flames spread rapidly, very soon completely enveloping Capstick's Railway Hotel, bat, owing to the efforts of the Brigade and a good supply of water, the fire was confined to these two buildings. Kell's family escaped without saving anything. The origin of the fire is unknown. The insurances are : — Kell: store and building £100 in the New Zealand; stock £600 in '. the Imperial and £600 in the National ; f furniture £250 in the Transaltantic. Capstick: buildiDg £250 in the North British and Mercantile and £600 in the Union; stock and furniture £150 in the South British and ' £440 in the Mercantile. i
