The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1879.

We scarcely know how to express the regret and annoyance we have felt upon finding that we yesterday gave currency to an incorrect report of an answer given by Mr Graham on Thursday evening to a question put to him at the Port Hall, and upon which report, believing it to be reliable, we based certain comments. It has always been our desire, and we think we may fairly lay claim to have carried that desire into practice, to supply correct reports of the utterances of candidates forelectiou, whether coming from those we support or those to whom we may be opposed, and that we should unwittingly have published that which turns out to be incorrect has, we can assure Mr Graham and our readers generally, caused us more vexation than we can find words to express. Upon being satisfied that such a mistake had occurred, the editor of this journal, feeling that Mr Graham was fully entitled to the amplest apology that could be offered to him, voluntarily and without the slightest hesitation wrote to that gentleman the following letter, which, we understand has been turned to account during the day:— " The editor of the Evening Mail presents bis compliments to Mr Graham, and desires to express his sincere regret that an erroneous report of what purported to be a reply given to a question by Mr Graham at the Port Hall should have appeared in the journal under his control. Owing to the reporter of the Mail beiug engaged at Mr Curtis' meeting an amateur had to be trusted to, and at the result neither Mr Graham nor his friends can possibly be more vexed and annoyed than the editor of the Mail, whose care and pride it has always been to furnish faithful and reliable reports. Mr Graham ia, of course, at liberty to make what use he pleases of this. "Evening Mail Office, "Nelson, Sept. 6, 1879."
