The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1879.
At Waimea West last night Mr Hurßthouse addressed a large meeting of the electors. A report of his speech appears elsewhere. To-day he has been returned unopposed for the Motueka district, arid we desire to take the opportunity of congratulating him upon the honor conferred upon him by his constituents. When Mr Hursthouse first entered into politics he committed some youthful indiscretions —the term youthful is to be taken as applying to his political 'and not his natural life— for which he was pretty roughly handled in these columns. To this he referred last night, and had the candour to admit tnat the " knocks " then administered had, he believed, produced a salutary effect. Where praise is deserved we can assure Mr Hurathouse that it affords us far greater pleasure to bestow it than to find fault, and it is with the greatest satisfaction that we now offer to him our honest and hearty congratulations upon tbe graceful acknowledgement of his services that to-day has been accorded to him, and to the electors of Motueka upon securing a representative, who, if he continues as he has commenced, bids fair to take a prominent position in the House. The time for receiving the nominations of candidates for tbe three Eeats in the City i Council, rendered vacant by the retirement, I in accordance with law, of Councillors Levieu, Everett, and H. Ilounsell, closed at noon to-day. Whether it is attributable to the interest centred in the general election, and the consequent excitement that so many candidates are in the field, we are unprepared to say, but the fact that seven gentlemen have been nominated to fill tl*e three vacancies is a healthy sign, and one that may be taken to show that the citizens are taking more interest in the well governing of the municipality than they have been wont to do. The candidates proposed are : — Messrs Eve-ett.Greisr, J. A. Harley, 11. Hounsell, Levestam, Levien, and Stringer. The poll will take place on Thursday the 11th inst. The annual meeting of the Licensed j Victuallers' Association will be held at the Albion Hotel at 23o p.m. to-morrow. The members of the Loyal Marine Lodge, 1.0.G.T. f will meet at 630 p.m. to-morrow, in consequence of the Hall being engaged for 8 p.m. The Temperance people of Nelson are requested to meet at the Temperance Hall to-morrow evening. At the Brightwater Court to-day, before Messrs J. W. Barnicoat, G. Talbot, and H. Martin, J.J.P., the following cases were heard:— Orchard v. Smith, judgment summons for £3 19s Bd. Judgment for amount claimed with costs £2 Gs, or in default one month's iniprisonment.— Lammas v. Miller. Action to recover £2. Judgment for amount claimed and costs £\ 6s. Mr Bunny appeared for the plaintiff in both cases. A meeting of the footbail team selected to play against Wellington is called at the Masonic Hotel at 8 o'clock to-nieht.
