The election of a City Auditor, vice Mr Scaife [resigned, wns held yesterday, but did not excite much interest, as may be gathered from the fact that, of the several hundreds on the burgesses' roll, only sixty-two took the trouble to record their votes. The candidates were Mr H. Edwards and Mr W. Clarkson. The former was honored with the confidence of 42 ratepayers, while the latter had to be satisfied with 20. At the declaration of the poll there were present, the Returning Officer, the Town Clerk, and a solitary representative of the public. The iu^rest attaching to this portion of the day's proceedings was in proportion to the number who attended them. We have to acknowledge thereceipt from the publishers of the June number of Words of Grace, a carefully edited and well printed religious journal published monthly in the colonies, the New Zealand office being at Dunedin. The attention of those interested in St. Mary's Art Union, in which prizes of the value of. £150 are offered to the public, is directed to an advertisement which appears elsewhere. The drawing will take place in the Girls' Schoolroom on Monday evening, commencing at 7 o'clock. The only mass at St. Mary's Church tomorrow will be held at eight a.m. At 11 a.m. mass will be celebrated in the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Waimea West. An information was laid this morning under the by-laws made by the Governor in Council, against a well known old aettler for travelling in a superior carriage on the railway to that to which his ticket entitled him. Sermons in connection with the Wesleyan Church anniversary will be preached tomorrow by the Rev R. Bavin, and on Tuesday there will be the usual tea and public meetings, at which residents in the country will have an opportunity of being present, a special train leaving Foxhill at 4.30. p.m having been laid on for the occasion. There was a special committee meeting of the Yonng Men's Christian Association last night when the following elections took o'.ace :— Mr J. H. Harkness, Secretary; Mr a.. W. Gibbs, Treasurer; Mr Bingham, Librarian. Evangelistic, Library and Lecture, and Finance Committees were also appointed. A course of lectures will be commenced very shortly in connection with the above Association. An Auckland telegram says :— Sydney Taiwhanga, a Bay of Islands native, who married a white woman, procured a deed of separation yesterday. His wife publicly kicked him in Queen-street. The Union Insurance Company's report for the year shows a credit balance of £30,374 17s lOd, which it is proposed to dispose of as follows :— Dividend of Is 3d per share; to credit of reserve fund, £20,000; balance carried forward to next year, £4124 17s lOd,
