(Per Australia, at Auckland.) The news of the relief of Elcowe and the severe defeats previously inflicted on the Zulus by Colonel Wood and Lord Chelmsford caused universal joy in Great Britain. The. diversion effected by Colonel Wood on tbe 28th and 29th March by dividing the Zulu forces, largely contributed to Lord Chelmsford's success. A speedy termination of the war is expected. Lord Chelmford's success rehabilitates him in public opinion. England has taken no '.action yet in regard to the crisis in Egypt beyond recalling Mr Rivers Wilson. France is also quiescent. The Khedive has issued a decree creating a Council of State under a Native Presidency the members being half Natives and half European, with two European Vice-Presi-dents. In consequence of the attempted assassination of the Czar the Russian Government have adopted severe measures for repressing Nihilism, amounting to a proclamation of a state of siege in all the chief cities. Passport regulations are vigorously enforced, and no citizen is allowed to possess firearms without especial license. The Governors-General j are empowered to arrest all suspected persons, and to try them by court martial I Every house in St. Petersburg is required to [ have a watchman day and night. I The colliers strike in Durham continues the miners refusing the terms offered by the owners. Parliament will not be dissolved this year The Metropolitan Board of Works purpose rejecting the electric light for the Thames embankment on account of its great expense over gas. Volunteers for the Cape are asked for from the regular army, militia and reserves. There are 1200 men called for. A tremendous riot occurred at Cork arising out of a difference between two rival bands. . Several houses were torn down and more [ than forty factionists were treated for scalp | wounds. One policeman's skull was fractured. Howes & Sons cotton spinning mills at Paisley have been destroyed by fire Th c loss is £60,000 and 400 persons are 'thrown out of employment. Russia has demanded the extradition of Nihilists by England. The latter positively refuses to deliver them up, but very cordial communications were exchanged between the Czar and Lord Beaconsfield. After Selvyeff 's attempt on his life, the former in replying to Lord Beaconsfield's congratulations expressed his belief that the preservation of good feeling between Russia and England was essential to the best interests of Europe, and he counted upon Lord Beaconsfield for the maintenance of such relations. Sir Robert Peel asked the Government whether steps would be taken to mitigate the present reign of terror in Russia, and was answered that the Government had no right to interfere in the internal affairs of Russia. Major O'Gorman, the member for Waterford city, was called to order for violently attacking Russia and the British Government.
