The Government are making preparations to confront and cope with any difficulty likely to arise with the natives on the west coast by enlisting men for the Armed Constabulary, drilling tbem, and sending detachments to the stations as soon as thoy are ready. Arrangements are also being made to bring 1000 friendly natives as a check upon Te Whiti's followers. All the redoubts and fortified places are being put in effective repair. Twenty-one applications were made to-day for twelve o'clock licenses instead of 10. All were granted, the Bench not seeing the fairness of compelling one man to shut up at 10 and see his customers cross the road, perhaps to a 12 o'clock house. Wednesday. A woman was arrested last night for stealing a gold watch worth £G0 and about £10 from au hotel in Sydney. She is the wife of a mau named Brown who is now undergoing two years here for stealing drapery. The Hospital Committee, after considering the medical men's report have decided to continue the Hospital where it is, and that it shall be temporarily managed by a Committee from the City Council; also that collections be invited from each church in the City and County of the Hutt as is done in London and Melbourne. The Hinemoa has arrived "with the Governor and party. Arrived— Ship Lock Kew. She left the Downs on March Ist. Lost Charles Jordon, an A.8., by falling from the foretop mast and killed. She brings a general cargo but no passengers. She is under charter to the N.Z.S Co. It is reported that 200 Constabulary will be immediately enrolled and sent to Taranaki. m . . Otaki, Wednesday. I here is likely to be bloodshed among the natives at Horowhenua through Kawana Huina. They are about to meet with guns and dispute certain land matters. New Plymouth, Tuesday night. The Governor, Premier, Colonel Whitniore. and suite left for Wellington by the Hinemoa at 4-30. The Governor defers his visit to Auckland until the 12th instant. m , Wednesday. 1 wo hundred Armed Constabulary will be stationed at Otaki, and a position taken up on Bayley's farm. This will form part of a general scheme of defence. Fifty Volunteers were enrolled at Okati last night.
