[PRESS AGENOT.] „,, „ Wellington, Friday. The Post Office Hotel narrowly escaped burning down this morning about three o'clock. Some coal ashes the cook threw in the dust bin broke into a blaze, but the fire was fortunately discovered and put out. The Post says that the Government have laid before the Attorney-General a case as to whether a certain article published by the Timaru Herald affords grounds tor a criminal prosecution against that paper. The article Btated that certain Government cheques bad been dishonored by the Bank of New Zealand, to an agreement subsisting between the Bank and the Government.
The Governors of Wellington College have succeeded in raising a loan of £5,000 for five years at 10 per cent. The Government have accepted a tender for the first sec.ion of the Otago Central Railway, but the amount and the successful tenderer will not be disclosed till the contract ia sealed. The new Supreme Court buildings, for which tenders are about to be at once called, will be of brick. The new Post Office and Telegraph Office are to be in one building, also of brick, on the reclaimed land. Plans are now in course of preparation. .It is probable that the removal of the Post and Telegraph Offices from the present site will be strongly opposed by the whole mercantile community, the present site being tbe most central obtainable. Mr George Thomas reports produce prices as follows:— Adelaide flour, £15; oats, 3s. bran, I id, wheat, chick, 4s; hams, 9d; bacon, S},d; cheese, Sd: maize, 4s 9d, good supply; pollard, £G 10s to £7; potatoes, £4, 10s to £5; butter, lld. Port Chalmers, Friday. Sailed: Stella, for the Southern lighthouse; also Jessie Niccol, on a sealing cruise to Macquaric's Island. The ship Wellington sails on Saturday for London with passengers and a large cargo, consisting of 064 bales of wool, 13,036 sacks of wheat, and 1386 cases of meat, valued at £29,699. Ciiktstchurcii, Friday. In the import market business is restricted. There is little change in the grain market. Wheat in small quantities bas changed hands at 3s 2d to 3s 3d for ordinary samples and 3s 4d to 3s 5d for good milling. In flour, two brands are quoted at £8 ss ; country brands are to be had for considerably less ; oats, 2s 2d to 2s 3d for feed, and 2s 4d for milling ; barley has declined, best samples ss; potatoes, 55s to 57s Od, hut farmers do not care topart at that ; in butter and cheese there is no alteration. Jacob Vogt has been committed for trial for forging and uttering a promissory note. The body of the man found in the river ir not yet identified. At tbe quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, a resolution was carried requesting tbe Committees of Chambers of Commerce to take steps to ascertain the possibility of the introduction of colonial wool and woollen manufactories into China and Japan. The following are the insurances on Messrs Wilson's & Co.'s building &c. destroyed last night : buildi.g £200 in the Standard, in the name of J. L. Wilson ; stock in the name of A. Wilson for £200 in the National. The two Wilsons are not related. Oamaru, Friday. The grain and breadstuff market is qi "et. The Maori meeting terminated yesterday and Rewi goes to Peuuui to-day. Some very inflammatory speeches were made amongst tbe Kingites during yesterday's meeting, and it is said that Tawhiao intends to propose another meeiing next December. It is considered that Rewi's defection haa disorganised tbe Kingites, Tawhiao being only now supported by a few Hauhaus and need therefore no longer be considered as a bugbear Auckland, Friday. Share market; Bank of New Zealand £18 7s 6d ; buyers, National Insurance 18s 6d. Grahamston, Friday. The railway surveyors have been stopped at Komata through the obstruction of Tuku Kingi. Although the latter has not shown any hospitality since the Native meeting, which he attended, the Government think it advisable to conciliate him pending the settlement of the land negotiations. The Advertiser invites Mr Sbeeban to visit the district and adjust the matter.
