EDUCATION BOARD.
March 6th. Present Messrs Barnicoat, (Chairman). Campbell, Shephard, Malcolm, Dencker, Kout, the Bishop of Nelson. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. Report of the Works and Finance Committee read and adopted, the chief points being as follows : 1. That the consideration of the re-ad justI ment of the Salaries of the Masters of Haven road and Hampden-s'reet schools be deferred until June, when the whole question of teachers' salaries can be dealt with. 2. That the Master's house at Richmond be provided with cat-offices and steps, but that the Question of water supply be referred to the Richmond Committee. Resolved — That the temporary appointments made by the Inspector of Miss Sunley junior, as 2nd assistant at Eampden-street ; of Miss Rose, as 3rd assistant at Toi-toi Valley j and of Mr John Moore, as assistant master at Haven road, be approved at. Resolved — That the Chairman and the Bishop of Nelson be deputed, with the assistance of the Inspector, to test the qualiiication3 Pf candidates for provisional appointments. Several applications for teacherships were referred to tbe above Sub-Committee, with a view to their reporting to the Board at its next meeting, March 13.* Resolved— That a imstr<&33 for the Third Division of Bridge-street school, at a salary of £100, be advertised for, Mi£3 Hough, the present mistress, having resigned. Resolved— That the First Division O* *he Town schools be supplied with new ti"3&9 and forms. Resolved— That the Third Division of Bridge-street school be provided with a gallery. Resolved — That Miss Folckmann, mistress of Hillside School.be appointed mistress of Charleston Girls' school, the Charleston Committee having been previously consulted. Resolved — That the Education reserve at Rockville, be the school site, as selected by the Inspector. Resolved — That the boys Lloyd, and Munro, formerly expelled from Westport boys' school, be readmitted. Resolved — That in order to meet the peculiar circumstances of the case, a scholarship of the value of £40 per annum, and tenable for 18 months from June 1879, be offered for competition to the boys attending Westport School, the examination to be held- in June, 1879. Resolved — After hearing the Inspector's report as to the election of the Lower Wakefield Committee, that the Board sees no reason for questioning the legality of the election. Resolved — That fresh tenders be invited for building a school and teachers' house at Riwaka, partly on a site adjoining the school reserve, and partly on the school reserve. The draft Report of the Board prepared by the Secretary, as amended, was ordered to be printed, together with tabular statement and balance-sheet. Resolved — That in consequence of the increase in the work of the department, the Finance Committee be requested to consider the question of strengthening the Secretarial staff. Resolved — That a master be appointed to Waimangaroa at once, at a salary of £150, with head-money and house-allowance. Resolved— That £12 be allowed for outbuilding and chimney at Tadmor. Resolved — That the Addison's Flat Commit tee be informed that the Board expect schools under their control to be kept, open for five hours daily for five days in tho week. Resolved — That tenders be invitod for building school-houses at Brightwater and Collingwood, each 36ft. by 20ft., on the same plaa as the new 3chool at Hope. Resolved— That the school site at B rightwater recommended by the sub-Conunittee be purchased. Resolved— That the question of providing more school accommodation in the Town of Nelson be referred to the Works Committee, who are to report to the Board on April 3rd. Resolved — That Thursday, March 20th, at noon, be appointed for the. election of a School Committee at Pangatotara, the meeting to be held in the school-house. Resolved— That an assistant for Charleston, at a salary of £72, be advertised for. Resolved— That Mr Franklyn be informed that all applications from teachers should be forwarded through School Committee. Resolved — That a similar notification be given to Mr Percy. Resolved— That two letters from Mr John Scott, making several suggestions to the Board as to the supervision of school buildings, and other matters, were referred to the Works Committee. Resolved — That the water be laid on to the school in Toi-Toi Valley, and that proper drinking and washing appliances be included in the work.
