AUSTRALIAN.
(Per A rawata.) Melbourne, March 1. Sir George Bowen in returning thanks to an immense crowd, who turned out to see him off, fairly broke down. Ten thousand people welcomed the Marquis of Normanby on landing at Sandridge. The voyage was very rough, and Lady Normanby never left her cabin the whole time. Sir Brien O'Loghlan, acting Chief Secretary, has is3ued an official Gazette notice warning persons not to believe the political news furnished by the Argus, and the following day he himself brought an official notification in his own hand writing addressed to the editor of the Argus The match between Lord Harris's team and the Victorian eleven was very exciting. The Englishmen scored 325 in their first innings, and it was thought they mu3t win in one innings, but the tables were completely turned, and eventually the Victorians won by one wicket. The game had two critical periods when the Victorians wanted 247 runs .'to prevent them following their innings, while their last two men went in with only 210 scored, and on the second day when seven wickets were down and 57 were \ wanted to win. The want of rain is disastrous to the crops. There have been numerous fires throughout the neighbouring colonies. The money market is very tight, and the banks are cautious in making advances.
