The search after the body of the alleged murdered man Costello has" proved fruitless, and the woman Sibree's statement is not corroborated in any particular. The girls who, she said, witnessed the murder deny all knowledge of it. * Friday. Charles Sibree was brought up at the Police Court this morning on a warrant for the murder of Costello in 1873. Mrs Sibree did not respond to the invitation of the police to be present. The Inspector said the investigation he had made showed not the slightest ground for believing the statement of the prisoners wife, upon which alone he had been apprehended. Prisoner wa9 discharged. Hokitika, Thursday. Mr Karanbach, of Diedrich and Karanbach, butchers and settlers at Ross, has been missing in the bush for three days, and great anxiety is felt with regard to him. Auckland, Friday, A Committee has been appointed to bring under the notice of the Government the disasterous effects of the abolition of the timber and grain duties. The Maori Parliament concludes to-day. Amongst the resolutions agreed to was one not to return any more members to the House of Representatives but to have a Maori Parliament instead. The next Parliament is to be held on the ground where the Waitanei treaty was signed and the following ' one at Kaipara. Cheistchdrch, Friday. The Harbor Board has resolved to have a graving dock with 26ft. on the sill at high water in spring tides. In consequence of the numerous fires throughout the colony the Insurance Companies offer £200 reward for the conviction of any persons maliciously setting fire to premises. Mr Montgomery addressed his constituents and received by acclamation a vote of thanks and confidence in him as their representative. Dunedix, Friday. Mr Bird, the Manager of the Fernhill Club, has been fined £25 for having in his possession a salmon trout, contrary to the provision of the Act. The police are laying informations with a view to testing the legality of Calcutta and monster sweeps.
