[PBKSS AOENOT.I Wellington, Monday. The annual District Council of the Independent Order of Recbabitea opened this morning, A. Levy, D.C.X., in the chair. The business transacted consisted principally of formal reports of special Committees being read and adopted, the meeting adjourned at noon till % a.m. to morrow. On Sunday a yacht with Dr Hines, W. Flood, R. E. Isaacs, and two others left Motuihi for Auckland. They encountered a heavy 6quall and ran for Brown's Island, where a person on the yacht saw a man struggling in the water. The yacht picked him up. He could only utter the words "my comrades." Two heads were seen some distance above the Crest of the Waves, and the yacht headed for them, but owing to the squall and tide they could not get near them. Dr Hines pluckily took to the small dingy and fastened the men with lines and towed them to the yacht. The names of the men saved are Slater, Graves, and Darrell. Grettown, Tuesday. The Greytown School Committee have chosen the Rev Mr Porritt for head master, and Miss M. Maher, from the national school of Ireland, as mistress of the Greytown school. Poet Chalmers, Tuesday. Sailed, ship Waipa, for London, with 17 passengers and a cargo valued at £89,000. Pictox, Tuesday. Beauchamp's saw mill Mainroa, Pelorus Sound, was destroyed by fire yesterday morning at about two o'clock. The insurances were £500 each in the National and Victoria offices.
