TREMENDOUS FIRE AT GISBORNE.

LOSS, £25,000.-INSURANCES, £14,650,

Gisborne, Wednesday. A great fire occurred last evening. The Albion Hote), Best's draper shop, Nasmyth's jeweller's, Bradley's stables, and other places were destroyed. The fire originated either in Best's or Nasmytb's places. Later. A fire broke out last night about 8 o'clock in Best's drapery store, and all the buildings ln the block were speedily reduced to ashes. The total estimated loss is £25,000, and the total insurances on the property £14,650 distributed amongst the various offices as follows :— National, £1300; Union, £1900; South British, £800; Victoria, £900; Norwich Union, £900; Hawke's Bay, £900Standard, £1400; New Zealand, £6550. The buildings burnt down are, the Bank of New Zealand, old and new buildings; Adams' stationer's shop; Good's watchmaker; Cooper's bootmaker; Bradley's stables; Gisborne Club; Albion Hotel; Adams' warehouse and piivate residence. A strong southerly wind prevailed otherwise the whole town would bave been reduced to ashes. Blenheim, Wednesday. The manager of the D'Ur . ille Island Copper mine reports having started the rise from no. 1 tunnel to form a connection with Manton _ shaft, and anticipates having 79 feet back by the end of the month. He will as soon as possible commence rising from no. 1 to the bottom of Owen's shaft, aud on the completion of these works large quantities of ore will be raised.
