The professional burglar named Brown aliat Furnace, said to be one of the Sydney gang known as "The Forty Thieves" was sentenced to-day to 18 months on three charges of larcency. A kit of burglars' toola was found in hia possession. Much sickness, particularly amongst children, is prevalent in Wellington, dysentery and diarrhoea being most frequent. Shortly before leaving by the Arawata the Governor signed the warrant for the execution of the murderer Walsh. Wednesday. The Hydrabad has gone broadside on to the beach with a list to seaward, and is reported to be much shaken. It is said that a majority of the membera of the Athenajum are in favor of opening the institution on Sunday. It ia expected that Walsh will be hanged on tbe 21st inst. The body of J. P. Jones, bookseller, who has been missing for some time, was found floating in the water at an early hour this morning, and taken to the morgue. Another public meeting is to be called to discuss the drainage question. The Premier bas notified to the Chamber of Commerce that he will eonsult with the Minister for Lands with regard to granting a site for a Sailors' Home.

The Marion Kenny on her cruise spoke the schooner Mystery, which had been on a cruise to Pentecost Island in search of labor. The Mystery sent a boat's crew ashore, which did not return. They cruised close in and saw the boat capsized, and learned from a Fijian who came on board that Muirand the boat's crew had been murdered and eaten. The master of the Marion Kenny afterwards saw natives like ants round the boat, which they dragged into a creek. The natives at Pentecost are very threatening, and say they will murder another boat's crew when they want a feast. Hokitika, Wednesday. A man named Stevenson was killed at Stafford yesterday afternoon by a tree falling on him while working in a sluicing claim; death was instantaneous. lie leaves a widow and seven young children. The Avonside Parsonage in the suburbs of Christchurch was totally destroyed by fire It was insnred in the Union Company for £650. * J At the Charitable Aid Board last uight it was stated that fever had broken out extensively in the Hospital, through the filthy condition of some of the wards.
