Thursday. Sailed— Claud Hamilton for Melbourne. — There has been heavy rain, thunder, and lightning.
Auckland, Thursday. Captain Von Werner, commander of the German man-of-war Ariadne, states that when at tbe Duke of York Island he fuliy investigated the action of the Rev Mr Brown in connection with the summary punishment of ibe natives for massacveiug the missionaries. He took the evidence of the German residents, who unanimously declared that Mr Brown had no option, aud that his prompt action saved tho lives and property of the Europeans. Captain Werner has resolved to write to the German Goverumeut urging them to recognise officially the services rendered by Mr Brown to the German residents by his prompt action, (and, trusts that the High Commissioner of Fiji expected in H M.S. Nytnphe to investigate the matter, will recommend a similar course to the English authorities.
The Secretary of the Auckland Working Men's Club having received a circular from the Wellington Club re Chinese labor, requested the various Trade Societies to send delegates to a meeting. The delegates met last night and concurred in the Wellington memorial, which will receive strong support here.
Chrisxchcbch, Thursday. The railway employees picnic takes place to day. Two trains containing about 1600 left thi3 morning early for Southbridge where the picnic will be held.— A patient at the hospital was taken out this morning on warrant aod committed to tbe asylum as a lunatic. — The Mayor has received a telegram from the Governor saying that he will arrive in Ohristcburch on the 11th inst., hold a ball on the 12th and leave on the following day — It is stated tbat a telegram has been received in town from the Minister for Public Works, statiDg tbat tenders will be called for in a few days for the extension of the railway line from Amberley towards Cook's Straits in accordance with the provisions of the "Public Works aud Immigration Act 1878.
