The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1879.

Electioneering matters are assuming more activity as the critical day anproaches". Mr Pitt's Committee have held two very satisfactory meetings, the room last night being crowded. To-night Mr Adams' Committee will hold their first meeting in the Masonic Hall. The meeting of the Tradesmen's Athletic Club called for last night was postponed till Saturday evening next through the unavoidable absence of the Secretary. : The firebells sounded the alarm yesterday afternoon, the cause being a smoke that was seen rising from the roof of Mr Scott's workshop in Trafalgar-street north. It appeared that a spark from the chimney of the engine had alighted on the roof ladder which, being somewhat rotten, took fire at once. A hose, however, is always kept in readiuesa on the premises, and a jet of water was at once brought to play, and all cause of alarm removed, We remind our readers of Miss Amy Sherwin's first concert which takes place to-night. She sang last night at a rehearsal, and those who heard her were delighted with

ber splendid voice and charming execution. To-morrow night a late train will give country residents an opportunity of attending the concert Mr Cary's panorama of the Arctic World which is to be exhibited for the first time on Friday night, is spoken very highly of by the press in other parts of the colony. The Palmerston 7Vm.ssays:— " The paintings are capital, but they pale into insignificance before the life-like automata which go through every evolution with a precisiou and ease truly wonderful." The transformation scene with which the entertainment closes is said to be remarkably beautiful.
