A DOUBLE SELL.
Last September a Yankee skipper arrived in Wellington from Melbourne. He w»8 a dashing fellow, very glib of the tongas, and wrote several good Jotters to the Press. Ho extolled the wonderful richness of New Guinea, and asserted he had lived there nine years, and possessed vast tracts of land in the island. He pointed out in grand language that fortunes might be made were a company formed to purchase a ship and trade between New Zealand and New Guinea. He produced testimonials purporting to be from leading men in the States. A cumber of people were induced to enter into the subject with great enthusiasm. These induced their friends in Otago to go in with them. As a ship was wanted the Yankee offered to sell big barque of three hundred tons, named the Courier, for £4000 cash. This was a Ion? price, but the company paid it willingly in order to secure the services of the
Yankee in opening ap a trade with (be native?. The Yankee exc-ised himself from joining in the Courier on the ground that he had to go to Sydney to take another ship of his to New Guinea, but he promised to meet the Courier when she reached New Guinea. It was then found, however, that there was do chance whatever of doing a iraiJe. Tha portion of the island to which he directed them was desolate, and she returned in ballast to Wellington a few diiya a^o. The Yankee, whilst in Wellington, induced a pretty, guileless young luJy to lewo her situation and go into private apartments, which he engaged for her. Her wedding drrsa was made, the wedding breakfast prepared, a splendid wedding cake was got ready, ami tho guests were iuvited. Tho marriage was to, teko place on Saturday morning, and he parted fondly from his Duloioea late on Friday night. Next rooming he was missing, act] it was found he had sailed for Sydney, taking with him another {<entiemau's sweetheart. He deaerted the latter in Sydney, and left for 'Frisco a few days ago.
