The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 1879.
Thb writ for the election of u member to represent the City of Nelson in the place cf Mr Sharp, resigned, has been received by the Returning Officer, who has appointed the 30th inst as the day of nomination, and the 6th February for the polling We presume that the two candidates, Messrs Adams and Pitt, for whom canvassing in a quiet way has been going on for some time, will shortly call meetings of the electors. Mr C. M'Gee, of the Nelsou Hotel, has generously presented a handsome silver star, bearing iu the centre a gold plate, surrounded by a wreath, adaptad for an inscription, to be fired for by the City Rifles. It may now be seen in Mr Muncaster's shop window. We understand that Mr M'Gee has also ordered a silver medal from Melbourne which he intends to present to the Artillery Company. At the Volunteer parade last night Major Pitt announced that he had received before he last wen', to Wellington a cheque for £5 from Mr Hunter Brown to be offered as a match prize at the colonial prize firing in march next. We are glad to find that outcitizens are contributing so liberally to this purpose. We have seeu some excellent specimens of galena or argentiferous lead ore from the lode now being opened by Mr Batchelor at Wangapeka. The specimens are very heavy, and we are assured by professional miners that the ore is of excellent quality and presents appearances indicating continuity and quantity. The samples ore evidently j from a large lode, aa neither of them shows the wait ou either side. It would have beeu more satisfactory to anyone not knowing the exact locality to have seen a piece of the adjacent rock or " country," but as we understand that the road Is at present a difficult one we will not complain of this omission. The appearance of the specimens gives us notoaly hopes of, but strong faith in, the success of the undertaking. We have to acknowledge the receipt from the publishers, Messrs W. 11. Glen & Co., of Collins street east, Melbourne, of a copy of the Colonial Musical Cabinet, a weli got up little work containing a capital selection of twelve songs, duetts, and choruses, as sung by (he Kelly and Leon's Minstrels. It is issued at the very small price of one shilling, and, we have no doubt, will find numerous purchasers. The Post publishes the following London telegrams dated llth instant :— Candahar has been occupied by the British troops, the Governor previously having disbanded his army, aud made a precipitate flight.— General Roberts attacked a strong body of Afghan | irregular forces, killing and wounding 500 of them, and capturing a large number of prisoner., with cattle, grain, ami stores.— I Marshal Kspartero, the celebrated Spanish statesman, died to-day, aged 87 years.
