Auckland, Thursday night. A fire on the reclamation ground near the saw mills to-day destroyed a small factory the property of Knight an asphalter. It was caused by upsetting boiling pitch. The damage is £ 100. The schooner Caledonia from Samoa reports that a large crop of copra is expected. Friday. - The Rev. A. Carrick, Minister of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, recently from Canada, writes to the Star staling thnt expriest Chiniquy is personally, known to him, and that few men are more honored by liberal aud intelligent Catholics as well as Protestants, There was a great demonstration last evening in the temporary buildings where Father Hennebtrry is holding his mission. The mail steamship City of Sydney from AucMand, which left on the- 12th ult. with cne November Colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco on the 3rd inst., two days in advance of her due date. The prayer of the petitioners against tbe use of the steam tramway has not been acceded to, but the tramway company will be required to adhere in future Strictly to the regulations, especially, as regards speed. The Royal Commission appointed to enquire into tbe condition of the settlement at Jackson's Bay consists of Mr Bunny M.H.R., Dr Giles, and Mr Whiteford R.M. The Commissioners are to visit the settlement in the early part of January. Crossbred greasy wool of fair quality fetched from 8d to S.Jd. — A preliminary enquiry bas been held into the wreck of the Southminster. The captain says he is not certain ns to the amount of insurance on the vessel, but he values her at £12,000 ft is not quite clear from the evidence what was the immediate cause of the wreck, every care Beeming to have been taken, unless through tbe effect of a current setting tbe ship inshore during the foggy weather which prevailed.
