CITY COUNCIL.
Tho ordinary fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present, all the members except Crs Harley and Crewdson. A letter was read from Messrs Gorrie and Sons asking for the remission of their water rate for the engine, on the ground that the late extensions had so reduced the pressure that it was not to be depended upon for working the engine. Referred to the Finance Committee. — A letter was received from J. Scott asking permission to stretch a rope from the Royal Hotel to Mr Pratt's shop, on which to give a tight rope performance.— -Cr Everett had no objection, provided the Council were not held responsible for the safety of the performer's neck. Permissiou granted.— A letter was received from Mr G. Jackson, asking for compensation on the ground that during his first month at the marine baths the reclamation works prevented many people using the baths. Referred to the Finance Committee. The Public Works Committee's report recommended that permission be granted to Mr Marshall to tether his horse iu Victory Square for Is a week on condition that he looked after the trees and did not allow his horse to stray on to the cricket ground; that the application to erect a lamp near the Wesleyan Church be not granted. It also stated that George Dunn's tender for the work in Russell-street for £58 had been accepted. His Worship referred to the approaching election of Mayor, aud stated that it was not his intention to offer himself for re-election.
