The most warlike news we have yet received is contained in a telegram we publish to-day, in which it is stated that England and Austria have informed Russia that they intend to compel her to evacuate Turkey in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Berlin. Russia replies by strengthening her position. From this it appears that war is not only imminent but inevitable. Tub Customs receipts for the week ending this day were £009 ISs 4d. Annie Liniond was charged this morning before R. Pollock, Esq., J.P., with making use of obscene language 'in Trafalgar-street late last night. Prisoner endeavored to excuse her conduct by stating that she had been drinking all day. Fined 40s, and costs 98, or fourteen days' imprisonment The Odd-Fellows fete at Wakefield on Monday promises to be ihe great attraction of the day, which will be observed as a public holiday. Every arrangement has been made to ensure a successful gathering, and the day will be brought to a close by a ball in the Choral Hall. Mr Ashcroft has, as usual, done all in his power to accommodate the public, aud trains will leave the Nelson and Foxhill stations at hours to suit everybody. A ckickkt match will be played on Monday at the Botanical Reserve k between an Eleven of the Star Club and a Fifteen, picked principally from Normanby and other clubs. The fifth annual meeting of the Ministers of the Nelson Wesleyan District commenced its sittings in the Hardy-street Schoolroom yesterday morning. The Rev. The election to offices then took place, the Rev, 11, Bull being appointed

secretary. Representatives were present from Greymouth, Kutnara, Hokitika and Richmond. The Revs. J. S. Rishworth and , J. Hosking are expected early next .week. The examination papers of one probationary minister were dealt with by the meeting* and a report of the sermon preached by him was presented. The financial district meeting was fixed for Wednesday next, at 10 a.m., and the Home missionary meeting for Tuesday. A ;uketin<; was held in the Wesleyan Church iu connection with the Temperance bociety last night, when there was a good attendance. Mr S. Sherwood, the Secretary; read the report, which showed au increase iu membership, which cow numbers 73, and five had left Nelson. Some excellent and very temperate addresses were delivered by the Chairman, the Rev R. Bavin, and the Revs Bull, Smith, and Buttle. The meeting was enlivened considerably by the performance of the singing class under the conductorship of Mr F. Thrippleton, who rendered their music sweetly and in capital time. Eight new members were enrolled affer the meeting. Since the last meeting of the Society a Band of Hope has been started, which now numbers 80 members _ Our readers will remember that a short time since it was announced that the Rev. John Guthrie, D.D., the eminent Scotch diviue, was about to pay a visit to New Zealand for the beuefit of his health. Mauy ia the colonies looked forward to the advent of Dr. Guthrie amongst us. We now learn that the Doctor died at London, ou the 18th of September, while on his way to New Zealand. He was 65 years of ago at the time of his death.
