fPRESS AGENCY.] Wellington, November 1. Monday, the lith of this month is to be observed as an official holiday, throughout the Colony, in honor of the Prince of Wales' birthday. The Post and Telegraph Offices will participate. The following tenders for services in the postal district of Nelson for 1879 and 1880 have been accepted :— Richmond and Riwaka, via Motueka, thrice weekly, H. Chalmers, £125 annually ; Fox Hill Station and Sherry river, weekly, K. G. Knapp, £40 ; Spriug Grove and Waimea West, thrice weekly, W.Satherley, £21 ; Nelson and Wakapuaka, thrice weekly, C. H. Martin, £25 10s ; Lower Moutere and Ngatimoti, thrice weekly, Charles Remnant, £20 ; Upper Moutere and Thorpe, weekly, James Rose, £12 ; Post Office, Nelson, and the Port, as required, W. Cooksey, £80 ; Fox Hill Station and Post Office, daily, A. J. Palmer, £25 ; Spring Grove Station and Post Office, daily, E. Dartnail, £3 ; Motueka Wharf and Post Office, as required, J. Delaney, £10 ; East Takaka and Waitapu, weekly, W. Barnett. £16. Saturday. Last night the general meeting of the Northern Land, Loan, and Building Company of Wellington was held. The report showed that the profits arising from the transactions of the past nine months amount to £2,574 which, after payment of the cost of forming the Company and current workiug expenses shows a profit of 13s 3d per share. Tbe directors suggest that the capital be increased. The report was agreed to. The Prince of Wales birthday celebration will be observed as a Bank holiday on the 11th inst. throughout the Colony, except in the Provincial districts of Canterbury and Auckland. In the former it is to be on the 9th, and in the latter on the 13th, that is to say the holidays are to be proclaimed under the Bank Holiday Act for those days respectively. A Gazette notice published this afternoon announces that John Nathaniel Wilson has been appointed a member of the Executive Council of New Zealand. Sailed— Taiaroa, for Nelson and North at 2 p.m. Passengers: Mrs Roberts and child, Miss Jackson, Messrs Turner, Jacka, Irood, Brown, Roberts, Edwards, and Fraser A sharp shock of earthquake was felt at Poverty Bay about 1.30. a.m. this morniDg. Palmekstox North, Saturday. The Collector of Customs, Mr London, Constables Purcell, Mclvor, Gillespie, aud Goodhall found an illicit still near here this morning on the premises of Schlater and Buck, who were arrested. Auckland, Saturday. Mr Buckland reports fat sheep in steady demand at 3,id, shorn, 2.id; fat lambs are abundant at 10s to 13s; fat cattle, 28s to 37s Gd. Arrived — Glenlora from London with fifteen passengers, after a voyage of 90 days. The Government have engaged a small steamer to meet the Hinetroa outside the Manukau Bar to tranship members so that the Hiuemoa can return to Wellington immediately. CnßißTCHtmcn, Saturday. It is said that Mr Rolleston will not offer himself for re-election as County Councillor. Among the prizes offered at the Northern Agricultural Show was one for the best kept farm, for which there are four entries; the Judges have not yet arrived at a deciaiou At yesterday's meetingof the Harbor Board, Mr CunniDgham gave notice that he would move at a future sitting that £500 should be voted towards the establishment of a Sailors' Home. It was stated that one member of the Board was willing to give £500. Gisborne, Saturday. There was a smart shock of earthquake at half-past one this morning. The Taupo was off Tobago Bay at the time felt the shock severely and and there was a great alarm amongst the passengers who thought the ship had struck on a reef, Captaiu Heale and others on board assign the earthquake as the cause. Similar effects were experienced by the steamer Pretty Jane while on her way to Auckland.
