CITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Council was held Last night. Present, Ilia Worship the Mayor, Crs Levien, Trask, Crewdson, Harley, and Cross. On the accounts being read, Cr Crewdson objected to the item £1 Is for veterinary surgeon for examining ahorse, but it was ultimately passed. ? An application was received froqj Mr Marshall for permission to' tether his horse hi yictory Square.—Cr Harley thought it would be a good thing to allow Mr Marshall the privilege of tethering' his horse on the ground »p a ftomjnal renta) o,n Ronditiqn that he kept away the goats which' now trespass and destroy the uewly planted trees.— Cr. Levien thought it would he better to jnstrucf the inspector of Nuisances to abound there occasionally ;and inform' against tfce owners
of goats found upoa this resem.— Mr MarshaU'g application was refused. A letter from Mr Orr, recommending the asphalting of the aide gutters, was referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was received from the Rev R. Bavin and the trustees of the Wesleyan Church, asking whether the Council would lay on and supply the gas if the trustees erected a lamp.— Cr Harley thought they should not accede to the application. At the request of the members of Christ Church they had erected a lamp post on the Church steps, and the sole result had been to call forth insulting letters in the papers. He did not approve of the site selected, but it had been chosen by the Surveyor au the most proper one. Having got their lamp, the Christ Church people now grumbled at the Council for not lighting it.— Cr Trask thought a lamp was required in the neighborhood of the Wesleyan Church, and proposed that the request be granted.— Cr Levien proposed that the matter be referred to the Public Works Committee. If a lamp was wanted there let the Council erect it, and be entirely independent of the church.—Referred to the Public Works Committee. The following tenders were received for the work in Russell-street South :— Merrick and party £82 10s; F. Atkinson £95.— 0n the motion of Cr. Harley it was resolved not to accept either tender. Cr Crewdson referred to the resolution previously passed authorising the construction of a sewer in Selwyn Place, and placing pipes in Hardy-street. Then he wished to have reversed. The Mayor ruled Cr Crewdson oufc of order as no motions for rescinding previous resolutions of the Council could be raored without notice.f
