CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting was held last Friday nicht. Present, all the members A telegram was read from Mr A. J. Richmond stating that a clause he had introduced into the Municipal Corporations Act empowering the Council to deal with nuisances such as that near Mr Crewdson's, and which was passed by the House, had been rejected by the Council. — A letter was read that had been addressed to the lessee of the Baths instructing him to require all adult males to wear bathing drawers when xising the Baths. — A letter was read from Mr Payne calling atteution to the damage that was being done to the trees od the Church Hill. It was agreed to take some steps to put a stop to it.— An application from Mr Butler for exemption from water rates for the Hardystreet Baths was refused.— ln consequence of a letter from Mr Scaife, the Secretary of the Insurance Association, the Surveyor was instructed to examine the smoke house at the rear of Mr Burrell's premises ia Bridge ■ street. The Finance Committee's report slated that they could not recommend the exemption of the Odd-Fellows' Hall from rates. With reference to the £1000 lying ;'at deposit on the joint account of the Gas and Water Works, ifc was recommended that £700 should be placed to the gas, and £300 to the water account; also that the credit balance of the waterworks account, amounting to £1700, be maintained for the purpose of making extensions where necessary, or that the rates might be reduced. The Public Works Committee's report recommended that sufficient of the 7in. main from the reservoir to lead the water across the high part of the town be taken up and replaced by 12 inch pipes. It further stated that although there was sufficient water for domestic purposes at the Hospital, Asylum, and College, the supply would be quite inefficient in the event of a fire.— Cr. Crewdson strongly supported the extension of an efficient water supply to the locality indicated.—Cr. Everett said that the outlay would be quite £2000, which would bring in no additional revenue. He thought it would be better to wait until the credit balance was sufficient to provide for the substitution of 12 inch pipes the whole way from the reservoir to the town.— The proposal was ultimately withdrawn. On the recommendation of the Surveyor it was resolved to fence the roadside from DaviV bonded store to Waimea-street, and to erect a urinal iu the locality; the two to cost £12. After some discussion with reference to Russell-street it was resolved that the Public Works Committee make arrangements forthenecessary repairs, not including the cutting at the top. Cr. Harley withdrew his motion relative to the toll-gate, as he understood that the Waimea Road Board intended to do away with it in April. Four years ago the Tasmanian export of tin was £8,500, while last year it was £252,000. A bill allowing women to vote in school meetings has passed both houses- of the New Hampshire Legislature. The Madras Presidency in India has been suffering from a plague of locusts, which has greatly aggravated the distress from famine. An English paper, in an article on the famine in Brazil says :— -" A painful impression seems to have been created by the fact that some of the food, sent at a heavy cost iuto the interior and distributed to the famishing sufferers, was found to have been mixed with lime by the dealers who sold it to the Government. This piece of work is said to have immediately doubled the previous large mortality of the district.
