WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting was held on Saturday, October 5, wheD all the members wpre present. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Overseer reported that as little as possible had been done during the past month. The bridge at Stratford's Greek is nearly completed, and I arranged with the contractor to have it well tarred. Mr Satherly should have notice to cut his hedge, which backs up th» water in flood time. Resolved, That Mr Satherly have notice to cut the thorns, and t* pat up a swing gate in the watercourse below the bridge. Should he not do so, the overseer is lo get it done, and the cost charged to Mr Satherly. Alao, that all obstructions in the watercourse below be removed by the Board. The Surveyor reported bavin? been engaged in defining the road in Poor Man's Valley, and that by Mr Leighton's faros. Also having examined the river bank at the back of CurnVs road, and recommended some piling being done to turn the water and protect the road, towards which Mr Gr. Bell offered to give the required timber. The work recontly done at the Bishopdale Station consists of a eidin?, and a short road leading thereto from the main road, bat as no provision is made for crossing \ the railway as recommended in the report and estimate forwarded to the manager, and the fences at the roadside have been made up, Mr Beattie can only reach his land on foot, and hes to carry the m^riata for his new bouse. In Waimea Wesf, the proposed alteration of road in Redwood's Valley has been surveyed, also the line of ditch proposed by Mr Siggelkow, in lieu of that originally pointed out, to convey the drainage complained of by Messrs. Osborne and others. Notice has been given to the applicants, but as objection has been made that the new line will probably cause damage to Mr Schwasa's land, nothing has been done towards cutting the ditch. The Secretary reported having forwarded to Wellington the Draft Bill re ] gorse, and having been since informed that it will be incorporated in a proposed Bill to amend The Public Works Act, 1876. He also reported that the ' Rate Book has been deposited for in- ' epection at Messrs Hodder and Co.'e, and the required notice given. Resolved, That the Resident Engineer be communicated with, respecting the otaiafiion at the Bishopdale Station, and the inconvenience to which the owner of the adjacent property has been subjected. Resolved, That a special meeting of the Board be held on Saturday, (he 19th instant, to hear any appeals againßt the Rate Book, and to sign the same, also, that the Collector attend at the nsual places in the various sub-districts to receive the rates. Mr Green attended, and urged the necessity of a cart bridge at the creik near Mr Stafford's stablep, offering to cart all the materials required as his contribution. Resolved, That a bridge be erected when funds will permit, and that in the meantime a plan, &c. be prepared. The following letters were read ;— Prom Mr E. Orr, recommending the uaing of asphalte iu the protection of river binks; from the Secretary of the Upper Motueka Road Board, approving of the action taken by tbis Board in reference to gorse, and expressing willingness to :i co-operate with the Waimea Roard in any other matters of general importance that may arise"; from Mr G. Parkee, requesting that access across the railway to his land at Wakefield be provided, and to be informed what assistance the Board will give towards making the road; from the Colonial Treanurer, advising that £262 0i 2d, being share of County Fund, has been paid to the Board's credit; from Mr Knapp, expressing surprise at the Board's offer of £5 for the corner of bis land, and that he does no intend to take less than £10. Resolved, That Mr Orr be thanked for bis communication, end that the Overseer enquire and report on Mr Parkes' requirements. Resolved, That an offer he made to the occupier of section 70, Waimea East, to rent the reserve thereon; should he decline, tenders to be invited. Mr Joseph Hammond applioi to hnve some gravelling done on the road in front of his house. Ordered to be done. Mr A, Harley p oposeii thet the Toll Gate should be abolished, as it inflict 8 great injury to the inhabitants of Stoke and Waimea East, who, b- sides beio.ii more heavily rated than those in the ether portion of the district, contribute the larger proportion of the amount collected at the gate. After considerable discussion, Mr Harley agreed to withdraw his motion for three months. Mr Fowler urged the necesfiity of procuring a road for access to the valley in the rear of Woodstock, Stoke, where there nre several «. tilers. Lankow appliod respecting the road near bis lanJ, overgrown with gorse, and which is not likely to be uaed by the public, when it was arranged that on condition of hit; clearing it, he should have the use of it for five yeais, aulij-ct, however, to public right of way it n quired.
