To the Editor of the 'Evening Mail.' Sin— ln your report of the meeting of the parishioners of All Saints on Tuesday evening last in the condensation of my remarks you have made some slight difference from what I said. When I stated that "if being a Protestant consisted, &c, I for one would rather not be a Protestant," your report is just what 1 said, but in the part "if to be a Christian, Sec, I for one would rather not be a Christian," was not what I said, but that " such Christianity was incomprehensible to me " My remark as to the supplement in use in Christ Church was in the form of a question, " Was it the most manly course to use the hymns peculiar to Hymns Ancient and Modern in the form of a supplement and reject the book?" In the remarks made by the Rev Mr Newth the omission of the words " God helping me " seemed to imply that in asserting the right of his office he was taking too arrogant a tone. Excuse my (writing this, as J am aware that any opinion I may or may not hold on such questions can only be of the smallest interest to the general public. Whilst very careless as to what may come of the name "Protestant," I should be most sorry to use any but the most careful and serious language of the name " Christian." — I am, &c, Geo. AsncnoFT. Xelson, Oct. 3, 1878. [We allow Mr Ashcroft to make these ex- • planations, but it is necessary to say that they are not in accord with our reporter's notes, which he usually finds are pretty reliable.— Ed. N.E.M.]
