Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1878.

A team from the Artillery Company having challenged a combined team from the City Kifles and Naval Brigade to a game of football, the match will take place in the ' Botanical Reserve to-morrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. The game is likely to be a closely contested one, as the combined team, although not so well versed in the game as their oppouents, is a very heavy one, aud will prove dangerous to their adversaries in the scrimmages. The following are the names of the players:— Artillery : Messrs H. Hodgson (captain), Ashcroft, Andrew, Askew, Chisholm, Clouston, C. Hodgson, F. Hodgson, Hood, Jennings, R. Pollock, j] Pollock, Thomas, W, Walker, and Wigzell. Emergency men, Davidson, Lane, Woodward! Combined Team : Messrs J. lutchiog (captain), Atkinson, Armstrong, Burns, Cator, Downes, Fathers, Hurfitt, Hunter, M. Jackson, T. Kitching, Lipscombe, Richards, Sharland, Simmonds. Emergency men, Batchelor, Sullivau, Woodhouse. We understand that Mr J. J. Patterson one of the masters of the Cliristchurcb! Normal School, has been appointed to the mastership of the first division of the Town Schools. Mr Patterson, besides producing very good certificates and testimonials from Victoria, was warmly recommended by his superior, JMr Howard, Principal of the Christchurch Normal School, an institution that has won a colonial reputation. There were 24 applicants whose testimonials were submitted to the Town Committee at their request. The Committee signified their entire approval of the appointment of Mr Patterson. William Read and Harry Burnard, who were yesterday before the Court charged with larceny, were discharged by the Bench, the evidence against them being of the* weakest description. At the Magistrates' Court this morning in the case of Edwards v. Rother, which was partially heard last week, judgment was given for the defendant with costs £1 Is. The first licenses under the Slaughterhouses Act of last year were issued this morning to two applicants, namely, Edwin Fowler, of Spring Grove, and J. Trevarwas, of Rhvaka.
