EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Education Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs Barnicoat (Chairman), Malcolm, Dencker, Rout, Wastney, Campbell, Shephard, Jackson, and the Bishop of Nelson. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The report of the Works and Finance Committee was read and adopted. Resolved, That the item " Butler News — advertising meeting for election of School Committee, £9 95," be disallowed, no such expenditure having been authorised by the Board; and further, that the Board desires it to be distinctly understood that under no pretext will it allow its credit to be pledged without the express sanction of the Board or its officeis. Resolved, That the lowest tender for clearing and levelling thejschool site at Reefton, amounting to £160, be accepted. Resolved, That Mr James Hewitt's tender for building a school at Reefton, of niatai, for £1633, be accepted} as beiug the lowest of the five tenders sent in. Resolved, That the following appointments be made, the School Committee interested having been previously consulted in each case.— Miss Eugenic Desaunais to be assistaut at Upper Wakefield: Mr F. Worley to be master of the Third Division, Bridgestreet; Mr J. J. Patterson to be master of the First Division, Town Schools. Resolved, That a mistress for the Eightyeight Valley school be advertised for, at a salary of £72 per annum with house. Resolved, That an alteration of the bouudaries of the Lower Moutere district be advertised. Resolved, That an application for an additional grant of £8 15s to the late teacher of Totara Flat school be not recognised. Resolved, That £18 be allowed to the Spring Grove Conimittre to defray the cost of desks and forms at River Terrace. Resolved, That the consideration of an application from the Westport Committee for an additional grant of £22 13s 7d, to defray outstanding liabilities, be deferred till next meeting. A proposition from Mr Jennings to set apart an education reserve in the Karamea, was approved of. The Secretary was instructed to forward, for the approval of: his Excellency the Governor, a copy of the existing regulations as to scholarships. Resolved— That £0t be set apart to defray the cost of enlarging the master's cottage at Lower Wakefield. Resolved—That the Secretary be instructed to acknowledge the receipt of a letter from Mr S. Baigent, of Lower Wakefield. t A letter from the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand having been read, requesting the Board to inform him upon what terms it had been decided to transfer its account from the Bank of New Zealand to the Union Bank of Australia, the Secretary was instructed to reply that the Board declines to give him the information he asks for. A cheque was drawn for the half-yearly Committee allowance, amounting to £269, to defray the cost of fuel, postage, stationery, and small repairs.
