We regret very much to have to announce the awfully sudden death of Mrs Crooke, which took place shortly before 1 1 o'clock yesterday morniug. The deceased was highly respected, aud was of a most charitable and kindly disposition, and her loss will be severely felt by many whom she made it her business to relieve when in poverty or distress of any kind. An inquest was held this afternoon at the Post Boy Hotel, when her husband gave evidence to the following effect:— The deceased was 50 years of age. Yesterday morning she went into her bedroom to dress for church. Shortly after he followed her into the room, and found her j lying dead on the floor. Although he had been in the adjoining room he heard no noise or struggle. Dr Farrelle stated that he had made a post mortem examination, and found that death had been caused by congestion of the brain, and a verdict wa3 returned accordingly. At the Police court this morning Harry Mitchell Brown and William Reed, residing on the Port hills, were brought up charged with stealing £22 from the person of Benjamin Fairhall, when in a state of intoxication, at the port on the 22nd inst. Prisoners were arrested on Saturday afternoon, and brought before a Magistrate aud remanded until to-day, without bail. This morning they were again remanded until Thursday, bail being allowed, each in £200, and two sureties of £100 each. We learn from the Telegraph manager that telegraphic communication with Europe has received a serious interruption, a break in the cable having occurred between Singapore and Batavia. The repairing ship left Singapore on Friday, but it is uncertain when communication will be repaired. The land line to Port Darwin has been repaired.
