EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting was held yesterday. Present: Messrs Barnicoat, Rout, Campbell ] Shephard, Bishop of Nelsou, and Dencker. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Resolved — That the travelling expenses of members of the Board be calculated at the rate of Is per mile one way. Resolved— That leave of absence be granted to Mr H. D. Jackson. That Mr Brown be allowed £1 in consideration of his substituting a thorn hedge fora gorse hedge at the back of the school ground, Toi-Toi Valley That the Finance Committee be authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £10 in planting forest trees in the school ground in ToiToi Valley. That the terms offered by the Union Bank of Australia for the Board's bank account be accepted. That the Inspector be authorised to make arrangements for employing a monitor at Foxhiil. Resolved, That Mr Dencker, in conjunction with the Inspector, be authorised to confer with the School Committees in the neighborhood of Motueka with the view of ascertaining how far it is practicable to secure a better education in those districts, either by raising the standard of instruction in existing schools, or by establishing a High School in the village of Motueka. The recommendations of the Finance Committee as to grants to School Committees for repairs were adopted. In reply to a communication from the Lower Wakefield Committee respectiug the transfer of the master and assistant at Neudorf to Lower Wakefield the Secretary was instructed to explain that the Board, in removing the teachers at Neudorf to Lower Wakefield, acted upon the provision of clause 45 of the Education Act with regard to the removal of teachers, and that they are supported in their interpretation of this clause by the opinion of the Attorney-General, and by a recent decision of Judge Richmond. And, further, that it is not only the duty but also the desire of the Board to consult the School Committees in all cases which are provided for by the Act, and that, in all cases not thus provided for, the Board wishes to act in harmony with the School Committees, as the best means of advancing the interests of education.

The question of teaching music in the schools was postponed. A circular from the Education Department having been read, requesting the Board to co-operate with the Government iv encouraging teachers emploj'ed in public schools to ensure their lives in the Government Insurance Department and enclosing forms for distribution among the teachers, the Secretary was instructed to take the necessary steps to carry out the wishes of the Government. Similar instructions were given as to the distribution among Chairmen of School Committees of copies of a memorandum as to cadetships of the Civil Service. The consideration of an application for a grant for a Chimney atPakawau was deferred, no candidates for the teachership of the aided school there having presented themselves.
