London, June 7, The German Emperor lias consented to the wedding between the Duke of Connaught and the Princess Louisa being celebrated in England. Miuisters will shortly ask the English Parliament for a marriage portion of £10,000 a year, in addition to the £1,500 which the Duke already draws from the Kate. The Duchess of Edinburgh visits Coburg, instead of going to St. Petersburgh. The Pope gave audienco to 500 German pilgrims at the Vatican gardens, when portraits of his Holiness were taken by a London photographer. The physicians are anxious about the Pope's health. A Committee of the House of Commons propose military retrenchments to the extent of a quarter of a million sterling. The British Consul, while journeying in Crete, was shot at by the Turks, but escaped unhurt. A railway is to be constructed in the Sandwich Islands by English contractors. The army in India is to be limited to a strength actually required for internal protection. The Shah of Persia has commenced his European tour. He left St. Petersburgh for Warsaw on May 28. The University College. London, and University Hospital gain between them, £50,000 by bequest of Sir Francis Goldsmid, who was treasurer to this institution. Cleopatra's Needle has been removed from Westminster to Adelphi Pier, and preparations are being made for landing and erecting it on the embankment. Dr. Hooker retires from the presidency of the Royal Society, and will probably be succeeded by Mr W. Spottiswood. An influential deputation has had an interview with the Home Secretary to present a petition 3igned by many thousands of persons praying that pubiic houses may by legislation be closed on Sunday. The Home Secretary while sympathising with the object, said he could not introduce such a bill. Admiral Hornby is to be created a X.C B Earl Dufferin has accepted the presidency of the Royal Geographical Society. The Princess of Wales was present at a grand concert given at St. James's Hall for the benefit of Signor Mario. The whole of the artists gave their services gratuitously, and Sims Reeves, who was too unwell to be' present, sent £100. The Hall was crowded, and about £1500 was realised. The is prosecuting a London chemist for having . sold extensively violet powder in which arsenic is the principal ingredient, and by the use of which the lives of several children were sacrificed. The visit of the Parsee cricketers to England has been postponed to next year.
