[press agency."} Hokuika, Monday. The Garibaldi arrived in the roadstead ou Saturday, also the Prosperity. Both vessels put to sea yesterday through stress of weather. The Zephyr sailed for Melbourne via Greymouth on Saturday. Captain Edwin's forecasts for the last three months have been exceedingly reliable. Charleston, Tuesday. Cronin and Donavon sold their gold obtained at Croninville, Totara, on Saturday, the result being that the two men bad earned £10 per week with a limited water supply. Wellington, Tuesday. A deputation consisting of Messis Gisborne, Woolcock, and George, M.H.R. waited on Mr Macandrew re connecting the East and West Coasts by railway. Mr Maeahdrew said the Government were so impressed with the importance of the scheme that they would not hesitate in undertaking the work at once, but that other works of more immediate necessity required their attention. In the meantime provision had been made for extending the line from Aniberley. In reply to a suggestion by the deputation that the Government should subsidize a steam tug for Hokitika, Mr Macaudrew said that this was a matter the Government could not uudertake, as such questions were left to the Harbor Boards. A large fire occurred at Masterton early this morning, when the following houses were destroyed:— Messrs Williams', Wylie's, Girdlestone's, Sellar's, and Hale's stores, and the Wairarapa Register office. The fire began in the latter, but the origin is unknown. It is suspected that it was the work of an incendiary. Previous to the fire being discovered an explosion was heard in the Jieg ; ster office, and then the flames spread rapidly. The estimated loss is between £20,000 and £30,000. Some goods from Sellar's and Hale's stores were saved, but much damaged by the rain. The rest are a total loss. The following are the insurances ascertained :— South British, stock, £2350, re-insured in the Imperial £500, Hanseatic £500; Victoria £600, buildings £250; Union, £750; North British, £1750; Victoria, £250; Phccnix, £500; Koyal, £250; Colonial, £500. CnniSTCHUKCii, Tuesday. Mr W. S. Moorhouse, M.H.R. has been appointed to represent Christchurch at the Wellington Municipal Conference. Miss Colville appeared after a long auscnee at the theatre last night. She had an enthusiastic reception. The Committee appointed to take legal proceedings against the Government, respecting tbe non-payment of the land fund, continue to receive promises of cordial support from the Road Boards in various parts of the province. Auckand, Tuesday. The City of Sydney arrived from Syauey having left on the 18th. Passengers for New Zealand: Mr and Mrs King , Mr C. H. King ; Mr and Mrs Gaineli ; Mr and Miss Pickering ; Mrs and Miss Stewart; Messrs Thomas, Robinson, Davis, D. L. Murdoch, Walker, and 17 in the steerage. For San Francisco; Mr and Mrs Scott-Siddons, Signor Rosnati, about 30 others, and 7 in the steerage.
