Wellington, Thursday night. In the District Court to-day in the case of Brown and wife v. Rendei!, a police constable, the defendant was cast in £50 damages and costs for assault and unlawful arrest of the female plaintiff. The evidence disclosed unnecessary interference and rough treatment.
The weather is unusually tempestuous. A Gazette to-night notifies that two and five shilling postage stamps will be issued on the Ist July.
Mr W. N. Blair is appointed engineer in charge for the Middle Island, and Mr John Blackett for the North Island.
Mr George Thomas reports produce prices as follows:— Flour, Adelaide £17 10s, Colo niai £12 to £12 10s ; oats, 4s 6d ; bran, Is 3d: wheat, 4s 3d; hams, lid; bacon, B£d; cheese! 7d to 8d; pollard, £7 10s; potatoes. £3 15s: maize, 6s; butter, 9d to lOd.
Hokitika, Thursday night. The returns of the election give Mr George a majority of 99. One polling booth return is not yet to hand, but there are only a dozen electors there. Seventeen hundred votes were recorded.
Oamakxt, Friday. Sailed: barquentine Ebenezer, for the Cape of Good Hope, wtth a cargo of breadstuffs.
Wheat is dull. Oats in good demand; fair business doing in flour ; wheat 3s lOd to 4s; Oats 3s 3d to 3s sd; barlsy 5s, ■ flour £19 to £ll 10s; oatmeal #19 ; peal barley £22 • pollard £5 to £5 ss ; bran £4. '
Chkistchurch, Friday. The Conference of Municipal and County Council delegates last evening resolved that in the opinion of the Conference the existing local bodies should undertake the distribution of charitable aid until the Government take measures in Parliament for a permanent transfer. The resolution was strongly opposed by the Christchurch ;s delegate, who urged that the Government should not be relieved of charitable aid distribution until permanent arrangements and subsidies were made by Legislative enactment, otherwise there would be great trouble afterwards to get it done.
The Canterbury Agricultural Association have passed resolutions in favor of the establishment of a National Agricultural Association for the Middle Island, and expressed the opinion that Christchurch should be the head quarters of the Association, and that the New Zealand Country Journal should be the Journal of the Association, and that the first exhibition should not be held until 1879. m , . Donedin, Friday. The Attorney-General's opinion is in favor of the position taken up by the Education Board, and that that body has the power of refusing to appoint teachers recommended by the School Committee.
A meeting of trades delegates was held last evening for the purpose of deciding what action should be taken in the present election for the city. There being but a poor attendance those present decided to let the matter drop. It was afterwards proposed and unanimously carried that a Com mittee should be immediately formed for the purpose of drawing up a programme with the view of forming a Trades Political Assocation, such Committee to report to a meeting of delegates.
Lyttelton, Friday. Arrived, ship Coromandel from London, 101 days from the Start.
Pom Chalmebs, Friday. Sailed, Albion Company's ship Wellington for London with 27 passengers and a cargo valued at £45,390.
