Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 1878.
We hare been favored with a copy of a manuscript paper that has recently made its appearance on the other side of the Bay under the name of the Mo'utka Telephone. It contains leading matter, local news, original poetry, and correspondence from a humorous writer who has adopted the norn de plums of "Knickerbocker," and who haa recently been devoting much thought and attention to Jthe study of Natural History and especially to that part of it which may be classified under the head of « The Human Animal in Love." On some future occasion we may make extracts from the letter containing his reflections on this deeply interesting subject. The editor, who appears to be of a peaceful turn of mind, is fully aware of the deep responsibilities he has assumed and is determined not to say, do, or write' anything that might give rise to trouble abroad. So, at least, we gather from the leader in the second issue, in which he refers to the Eastern question in the following terms: — " The latest news from Home is as usual of a very conflicting character, and altogether very much mixed up. There is no doubt that a great change, both socially and politically, is going on in Europe, especially on the Continent. And, as in these unsettled times, a man has to mind his P's and Q's, we shall say very little about it, and confine ourselves strictly to facts ; and though we are not in the least frightened at the Emperor of Germany or the Czar of Russia (bless their old souls!) yet still we should not like any misjudged or hasty statements of ours to sec two nations together by the ears. Nothing would give us more pain than to know that we had been the cause of any of those awful catastrophes called wars, so, as we have said before, we won't say anything about it, but confine ourselves strictly to what goes on in pur own little shed." A very laudable and judicious resolve, considering what might be the awful result of pursuing a different course. We wish our young contemporary long life and prosperity. . ' ; Up to the time of our going to press nothing had been heard of the Taiaroa, which left here on Saturday for Matiu'kau, carrying the outward San Francisco mail. The Zealaudia arrived at Auckland from Sydney at an early hour this morning, and was to sail for San Francsaco this afternoon, so that, unless there has been some carelessness in omitting to report the arrival of the Taiaroa, the Southern mails will have missed the steamer. Ik the District Court yesterday, the case ofPettit v. Lucas was brought to a close shortly after five o'clock. Mr Adam 3 argued that MrLucaß could not possibly be liable, as the plaintiff had received far more than was due to him at the time of the defendant retiring from the partnership, and there waa ample evidence to show that Pettit had been made aware of the dissolution on the day after it took place. Mr Bunny replied, fry- !
ing great stress ilpon the fact that the dissolution of partnership had not been advertised. From the general tone of his summing up, His Honor the Judge appeared to take the view that Pettit was cognisant of the dissolution shortly after it was effected, but the jury thought otherwise, aud returned a verdict for £21 11s 2d and costs £8. 35.
