LIFE POLICIES AND INTEMPERANCE.

A. step has been taken by the Mutual Life Assurance Company of New York which (she Commercial World thinks) cannot fail to have a very palpable effect with regard to intemperance, both amongßt its own immediate connections and outside. By order of the trustees of the . com.pany a circular of p. most important character has been issued by its executive officers to ench of its 90,000 assured constituency, setting out in a formal and legal way the resolves of the trustees with regard to all claims which may come against tbe company arising by death from intemperance. Briefly stated the resolve of the trustees amounts to this : all claims arising by death from intemperance may be regarded as null and void. We confess that this resolve does not in the slightest degree take us by surprise. The reasons given in tbe circular which have led to (hie conclusion are perfectly sound and logical, although only now enunciated for the first time in a business form. We have no doubt Ibis method of; dealing with claims arising from intemperance will induce many to shrug their shoulders in distrust of its practicability. But the trustees of the Mutual Ljfe of New York are not of this order of men. They arguej that they have a duty to discharge to the persons they represent which has n present and future application, and cannot stand by dormant while the funds of the company are applied in discharge of claims resulting directly from the effects of intemperate habits.
